Be sure to check the closed captioning of the TV as well and turn it off. This worked for me.

If you are talking about subtitles in a movie then all you have to do is go into settings for the movie (DVD) and turn them off, if it is in a movie player on a tv or computer then it will be the same, look for the settings menu and turn off the subtitles.

I can't get subtitle to turn on. Zenith DVD player to play movie with Subtitle

What you want is Closed Captioning. It has nothing to do with subtitles. If you turn off the speakers in your TV, the CC should appear after a brief pause. If your TV is not equipped for CC, this approach won't work

Can't get English subtitles on

Check the language settings on the DVD player. I'm not familiar with Panasonic machines, but most players have default language options for subtitles, soundtrack & menus.

The firmware update may have reset this option.

This is likely your DVD player, not the tv.

First go into the setup menu of your DVD player and make sure "subtitles" are turned off.

Next, put a DVD into the player and when it gets to the menu, go into the audio setup.

If subtitles are turned on, turn them off. If subtitles are turned off, turn them on and exit the menu, then go back into the menu and turn them off again. I've seen this reset this same problem on some DVD players.

Subtitles

Press the setup button. Go to the audio tab and set the subtitles to off.

Sometimes, a unit will get stuck. After doing the step above, put a movie in and wait for the menu. Use the DVD menu to go to audio and select the subtitle option to off.

In both cases, if the option already shows it is off, then turn it on. Exit and go back into the menu and turn it off again.

If you have two sets of subtitles when the DVD subtitles are turned on, turn off the closed captioning on the TV menu and on the DVD player and this should solve your problem

Subtitles...

This could be a problem with a particular DVD media and not the player. The movie (or the program on the DVD) is recorder with default English subtitle. Have you checked it with any other movie DVD to see if it is the same behavior?
