When I take a number of pictures at a time quickly after each other the camera seems to shut down. I have changed both batteries, this then reformatted my sd card! Any ideas???
There might be a communication error between your lens and the camera body . you shoud try to do the ff. 1. remove the battery pack and reboot the camera if the problem still persist sometimes the flex cable on you lens is damaged you may visit the service center for this but you can still use your camera taking picture by setting the auto focus to off (turn off the auto focus button on the lens)

Err 99 Some other fault.
There is something wrong, but the camera does not know what.
This number is for all errors the camera can't handle.
Try the normal "reset" method as follows:
Like a cold boot for a computer, the camera can be "rebooted"
follow the following steps:
Switch of the camera and remove the battery.
Remove the memory card and the lens. (if possible)
Recharge the battery. Wait till the indicator on the charger indicates the battery is fully charged.
Check all contacts, if they are clean and shiny. Contacts (from battery and memory card, only to be cleaned with a dry cloth or cotton swab(s).
Reinsert the battery, reinsert the memory card and re-attach the lens.
Then switch on the camera.
If this does not help, contact a certified Canon repair centre.

Here is a link which may help you.

It may be that the contacts on the lens is dirty, follow the directions, by using a clean pencil eraser (I would also suggest to use alcohol and clean the contacts after using the eraser). Also to remove the date button battery and the other batteries, then turn on the camera (with all batteries removed).
Then put the batteries back in.

Had this problem before found this guide online
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.
To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.
SOURCE: Codee error 99 ??
Hi There,
on these models the 99 code is generic, and can mean a bunch of different errors, but usually it is dirty contacts. It can be on the battery, or more likely between the lens and camera body.
Check out this link here, there are a lot of good things to try.

If none of these things work, I would definately contact Canon Tech Support, especially if it is under warranty.

Good luck. And don't listen to the comments that Canon is bad, I have had Canon's for years, and they are great cameras!

This could well be a serious issue, which you'd need to send to your manufacturer to fix, however there are a few things you could try first:
Take your lens off and with a clean rubber (like on the end of a pencil), clean the contacts of both the camera and the lens.
