Solution:

Product keys are required for installation of Autodesk products and are used to differentiate products that are both sold independently and as part of a product suite. For example, installing AutoCAD 2014 as a point product requires product key 001F1, but installing AutoCAD 2014 from the Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate 2014 requires product key 781F1. The same version of AutoCAD is in both software packages but the product key differentiates one package from the other

If you registered the product on purchase, then you can contact Magix, and they can provide you with the product key.

The serial number is provided when you purchase the software, if you can't find it you should contact Magix Tech support

Maybe a file in the usual program or configuration directory was locked by another program (e.g. antivirus scans) when you were removing the old edition of Magix Edit Pro; that would leave directories like /Programs/Magix and /Data/Programs/Magix and possibly registry entries (call up RegEdit and delete (or export and then delete) the old items pertaining to Magix or EditPro) around blocking 17 from coming in. Just rename those vestigial directories so they won't be in the install's way. Then retry and report...success?

This Magix Movie Edit series were made to run on Windows 7 systems too. So probably your license key was released for your previous computer ONLY. On the list of compatible MAGIX products (for Windows 7) are mentioned just:

• Movies on DVD 8
• Movie Edit Pro 16 / 17
• Movie Edit Pro 16 / 17 Plus
• Rescue Your Videotapes! 3
• Video easy HD
• Video Sound Cleaning Lab

So your MAGIX Movie Edit 12 is not included.
Anyway the same manufacturer says that:
"If you have difficulties with the installation of our products or you have trouble with the system environment email us here: http://support.magix.net/".
... I'd suggest you to do so.

The Magix licence agreement specifies that the software is licensed for use on one computer. With the serial number provided you can activate the software up to three times before a new key must be generated. This is for installation on one PC. To install it on a different PC it must be uninstalled from the first one. If the key has been used three times and no longer works to activate the software a new key can be requested upon request.

this usually occours when the screen resolution is lower than that required by the program......
try the software at higher resolution or check the system requirements if the video and sound cards meet the requirements of the program.....
