WD 250 G hard drive will not turn on at work

My WD 250 G hard drive works fine at home, but will not turn on when connected to my office computer. It is plugged in and connected through the USB port. What do I need to do?

If that is the case and it works on another PC, your office PC may either..

Not have USB driver installed, and therefor cannot connect to it. I suggest running Windows Update>Custom Update, and under HardWare I imagine there should be an USB driver of some sort. That may fix the problem.

Another issue could be that the USB port has a hard ware failure. Try the other USB ports, if still nothing then it is most likely going to be a driver issue or maybe... all your USB ports have a Hard Ware failure of some sort.

You can check if you need drivers by going to Start>(Right Click)My Computer>Properties>Device Manager Tab. If there are any yellow or ! drivers, you will need to find them via Microsoft Updates, Manufacture/PC Brand Site (I.E HP) or google the driver needed for your particular modeled machine.

I hope I have been of some assistance.

Good luck!

This happened on my computer randomly where the drive would only power on momentarily if you unplugged it and re-plugged it either tot he computer or the power source. It did however, work on my other computer. I followed the instructions of Inzanio09 to the device manager tab, and my solution was a bit more simple. It turned out that the drive was just somehow disabled. (red x over it) All i did was clicked the button above to enable and got all my music back! Thanks for getting me that far Inxanio09.

I believe the MyBook line of products needs to have the software installed on each PC where it is used.

Dropped it once and then it was working but not anymore, when connect to the computer the light is still on but the computer doesn't recognize it.

Hi ,
The best way I can think to recover your data is to extract the HDD from it's box ( box will be lost ) and connect the drive directly inside your desktop .
You could also try a recovery tool , from here for instance
http://www.geckoandfly.com/3163/crashed-hard-drive-hard-disk-data-recovery-software-tools-and-service/
Otherwise , you could ask a recovery office to do the job for you but it will cost you lots of monney .
Best regards .

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

External Hard Drive connected but hidden !!!

Connect it to your computer.
Right click on my computer and select Manage
On the left side click on Disk management.

Now on the right side, look around and see if you spot the external drive there.

What do you see there?

Also look into device manager, then look for anything with ! or ? yellow marks.
