Ok, so you have errors with the cheap MP3 Player from RCA.
Cant play songs; Cant add or remove songs; Get error message “Corrupt file” when connecting via USB.
Here’s what you do.
Insert your MP3 into the USB.
Go to “Start Menu” then to “My Computer”, then RIGHT click on your PEARL device, (note: sometimes this may take a while since its having to find it ~1-3 mins), then choose “Format” from the drop down menu.
The format window will open, (again there may be a pause here ~1-3 mins), and choose “Format”
(NOTE: all your data will be erased… sorry)
While that’s finishing, go to http://www.rcapearl.com/download.aspx and download the latest firmware for the unit. (SAVE IT to your HD, and then open it, don’t open from website)
When the format is done, remove your MP3, and turn off the power.
Re-insert the MP3 into your computer via USB.
Run the Firmware program you just downloaded, and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. (Again, this takes about a min)
Reboot ONLY AFTER you are 100% complete with the firmware install.
Now you are ready to install new songs and files to your MP3.
A few notes:
To prevent this from happening again, always use the “Safely Remove Hardware” utility from the icon in your toolbar. Its usually located in the lower right hand corner of your main window, next to your clock… unless you moved it. The USB from RCA uses a shared file to communicate with the computer. The higher end priced MP3’s have their own program built in. If you do not remove it correctly via this method, you could loose part of the file data, and now you can no longer connect to ANY pc.
Songs skipping, or MP3 skips entire song:
This is common among all MP3’s. the fix, simply get a better copy of the song you have. The data was compromised.
RCA MP3 spontaneously shuts off:
This is a feature within the unit. Open the menu of the MP3, via the “m” button, and go to “System setting”, then to “Powersaver”, and set it to “OFF”. (Be warned, carry extra batteries if you do this, and forget its on)
Lastly, remember you wanted a cheap unit, and you got one. Though keeping these notes in mind will keep it running for a long time. Until you get enough green to get a good one.

If your player simply can't be detected:
1.Make sure a fresh battery is installed (obvious, but hey why not?)
2.You may have an issue with your USB post. It is certainly possible that other devices may work in the port but this one won't. The farther the port you are plugging into is away from the actual USB hub chip, the more likely that this will happen with some devices. If you are plugging the device into a USB port on the front of your PC or into a cable or NON-POWERED USB hub (one that isn't plugged into a little power brick) simply try plugging the device into one of the USB ports on the BACK of the PC next to all the other connectors. That should give you to shortest path the the actual USB chip on the motherboard and may fix the problem.
The are some older computers that have both USB 1.2 and 2.0 ports as well (I have an older Fujistu laptop like this) make sure you are plugging into a USB 2.0 port in that case. I have a thumb drive that fails to be recognized on the older ports but works just fine on the newer ones on the same PC.

Ok, to all the RCA people with Pearl MP3's...
If you have the "can not connect" or "corrupted files" errors upon connecting the USB, please do the following *note: you will loose your songs and data.
Plug in your MP3 via the USB, go to "Start Menu", choose "My Computer" select the drive where your Pearl is, and Right click, (you may need to wait a few mins and let it find it ~1-3 mins), when the menu pops up, choose "Format".
(again, this may take a little bit ~1-3 mins)
then go to http://www.rcapearl.com/download.aspx and download the firmware. install it and follow the directions EXACTLY as written.
remove your MP3 and reboot. (NOTE: DO NOT DO THIS WHEN PROMPTED BY THE COMPUTER DURING THE FIRMWARE FLASHING... ONLY AFTER YOU ARE DONE!)
Now you can reinstall your songs and continue to use the drive.
the RCA unit is cheap. you paid for a cheap unit, you got one. To prevent this from hapening again, you can choose the "Safely Remove Hardware" Icon from your system tray (lower right hand corner, next to your clock). The corrupt files are files which are left behind by trying to use a resource file in your computer. If you break this connection before the files are transfered back, you have part of a file... I.e. Corrupt.
Player turns off automatically:
This is a feature in the MP3 player. go to the "My Settings" in the MP3, and set the power saver feature to NONE.
Songs skip or sound bad:
ALL MP3's have issues like this. if the music file is bad, then the MP3 will either skip it, or try to play it.... horribly. To fix this, simply find a better version of the file.
Good luck and enjoy.
P.S. - If you want better user performance from a MP3 player, then shell out a little more green for a good reliable one.
