Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Wrong power supply used with a maxtor external hard drive

My husbands doing while I was out of town.. gotta love it.
Same symptoms..quick flashing green light and not recognized by the computer..
I got the case opened, plugged it in to another case and tried to retrieve data, but it wouldn't work, It would kill the power as soon as it was plugged in. however when I plugged in the power supply ( the old case) the light went solid green ( with out the HD attached), this makes me believe he fried the drive not the power supply.
Any trouble shooting steps I might be missing or should I give up and call it a loss? That was so much music and many memories in pictures...Bummer.

You could buy another drive with the same specs and replace the circut underneath the drive with the circut from the new drive, then try it in your new enclosure

Try the manufacturer's web-site: http://www.MAXTOR.com and see if their E-commerce site offers that part-number.
Or, given the part-number on the power-supply, do a search on eBay -- you'll probably find third-party "compatible" power-supplies.

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

Maxtor external Hard drive not recognised on any pc

Hi cimbom76,
Sorry to hear of your problems. The following is taken from the Seagate (they own Maxtor) website at :-

http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=PersonalStorage&thread.id=192

For Maxtor Basics and Personal Storage 3100 and 3200 drives, there may or may not be an LED on the power supply, but the light on the drive should usually remain solid during normal operation, while powered on.

1. But if the power supply does have an LED on it, isolate the problem by connecting the power supply into a power outlet without the hard drive connected to it. If the LED blinks in this configuration, the power supply is faulty. Please contact Technical Support for replacement information.

2. If the LED remains solid, connect the drive. Once it is connected, turn the drive on. If the LED begins blinking, the drive has an electronic failure. Please replace the drive. You can create a warranty replacement order to replace the unit.

From what you have said i'm afraid it sounds like there is an electronic failure of the drive. I haven't followed the process through but they do offer a Data Recovery Service at :-

https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-us

There is an online form to fill in or you can telephone
020 7432 4619 to talk to a Data Recovery specialist.

I hope this helps and I hope that you can recover your pictures and videos.
Mark.

Used wrong power supply .

Hi,

If you have used the wrong power supply, the cicuis might be shorted.

If is posible they will solder the bolder & make it work.

I dont recommend it as it will give problems again.

Or

Its just the time to get rid of that.

Be careful in th future.

Good Luck.

USB CONNECT ONE FOR POWER+DATA ? AND THE OTHER POWER ONLY?

It sounds like your USB ports just aren't putting out enough power for this device. Did the drive come with an external power supply? If so, does it work when you use the external power supply?
