I am buying a new i-Mac with the Leopard System. I would like to use OmniPage OCR on it and am looking for an available scanner that supports this software My dealer advised Epson Perfection V-300, but that is described as a Photoscanner, which I don't need. I think he does not understand my needs; I am working with many languages and need to scan books in order tio study their lexicon. into my computer. I am used to OmniPage and get good results with it (using a HP all in machine for a Compaq. What woujld you adviuse me?

Are there more people who prefer HP to Epson for OCR tasks?

  • minne_g_debo Jul 01, 2009

The document feeder is not necessary, since I copy books. instead perfection is important; that's why I need OmniPage. One of the books I want to scan is from the 17th century and has some funny character types, such as prolomnged s's; I must be able to train the software to understand it. Another is a Romanian book of the communist period; you can imagine the paper and print quality.
I am not quite sure whar manufacurers mean by Doicument scanners; I guess they stress quantity.

Yes, I found the explanation very clear. I now know how to proceed with my dealer. Thanks so much.

That's correct, "document scanners" in general are interested in fast input and output of scanned pages. For the work you do you'll need a high quality yet quick scanner.

I personally do prefer HP over any other brand for their better compatibility with various operating systems and support.

Scanners marketted as photo scanners may be ideal. They have the capability to scan various papers types (matt and glossy) and various quality (DPI).

I would recommend using their product chooser here and selecting the points which matter to you most. These are their business-line scanners and are usually more expensive. When you see the results, go through their recommended scanners to see if they are compatible with Mac.

Their home products are slightly cheaper and should still do the job well. They are here.

As you can see from this page, the document scanner description stresses speed over quality, and the photo scanner is the opposite. I would also recommend a photo scanner (photo being a general term for quality over speed).

Hi There!

I've read from Mac forums that some do not recommend HP scanners with OCR.

Canon imageCLASS MF4320d or MF4350d supports Omnipage and is compatible with Mac OS X and above.

Here's an article from Canon that provides instructions on how to use Canon scanners with Omnipage for Mac.

Hope this helps.

Also, if i may add. If you basically just want a document scanner and not into all-in-one printers, you may take a look at canon's document scanners: There are those with automatic document feeder for easy scanning.

Also, Epson Perfection V200 is already discontinued and replaced by V300. This scanner support Mac OS 10.5.x and has a bundled ABBYY OCR software.

My Canoscan 4200F has no OCR software. How do I get it?

OCR software is usually a third-party program. Sometimes it is available on the original driver CD but it isn't included in the downloaded driver software. In the case of the CanoScan 4200F, the CD included the OmniPage SE OCR program. The SE indicates a Special Edition only bundled with the scanner and was only available for the OS versions that had been released when the scanner was first available. If you have the original CD (for Win98-XP), try to install the program using the Custom install option. (Check your current OS version. A 32-bit OS is more likely to support the OmniPage SE. With Windows Vista and 7, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System to determine the version. x64 indicates a 64-bit OS. ) If your current computer doesn't have an optical drive, use an external optical drive to install the program.

If you do not have the CD or your OS is incompatible with the Omnipage version on the CD, you will need to either purchase OmnuPage ($99 with a rebate from many vendors), AbbySoft's OCR program or one of the other OCR programs. SimpleOCR is free for personal use, . The biggest problem with the free OCR programs is that they do not handle documents with columns properly.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Can the canoscan lide 70 scan documents to work so they can be edited? Is so how

Yes, but you have to use a special program called an "OCR" (Optical Character Recognizer) which will "read" the document from the scan. A scanner only produces a picture of a document, and it requries special software to "read" that image and make it editable.
The LIDE 70 comes with OMNIPAGE SE (special edition) which will work for simple documents. For more complex documents, you may need to buy the full edition of OMNIPAGE or another OCR package like FineReader. It is also built in fto software like OneNote and Evernote.

I want to scan a paper and i want to save it as word so that i modify it. How can i do it?

It depends on if you have the full software installed. The MP160 documentation indicates it came wth ScanSoft OmniPage SE. Open MP Navigator and choose this program, you can output the scan as a text file. If you did a custom install, you may or may not have installed the program. If you omitted the program, do a new custom install.
OmniPage is an OCR program and will output to a number of formats (you will choose File, Save as) after scanning. Word can import RTF and most other choices as well as .doc files.

If you don't have the software disc, the software can be obtained from this URL:

Alternatively, there is a free OCR program ( that will do the same thing. However it doesn't handle text in columns (newspaper or magazines) very well.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I'm Thaide Mata, From Venezuela, I want to connect my Canoscan LiDE 25Flatbed scanner to my laptop but I cannot locate my CD-ROM disk. Is there any other way to get that information so that my laptop...

You can go to this page, select your operating system and download the driver and software utilities:
LiDE25 support page
This will allow you to work with your scanner.

If the CD contained some other bundled 3rd party software (like OmniPage OCR or PhotoStudio for example), then unfortunately it will not be available for download.

Ocr software

If you have lost the cd you can order another one from brother support (expensive!)

Have a look at eBay. Buy a defective mfc. Make sure that the cd is part of the offer.

If you want to use ocr only go buy omnipage software (scansoft). paperport includes a light version of the omnipage engine
