Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I have an Initial DTV-172 television. I am trying to use it as an external monitor, but the screen resolution is wrong. It only lets me choose between a screen resolution of 800X600 and 1024X768, while the screen ratio is 16:9 and HD. I'm not sure exactly what the resolution should be, but 1024X768 does show an image on the screen, just stretched out (which I don't like.) Thanks. -Eric

Hey,

optimal resolution is 1280 x 768 which should be available from your laptop from the resolution settings, make sure the monitor number 2 is enabled - so you have different picture for your laptop and for the tv, if your laptop monitor can't do 1280 768 then you won't be able to use the optimal resolution when you have same picture on both.

I have an Initial DTV-172 - 881093d.jpg

so you need to make sure it shows up like this - number one would be your laptop display and number 2 would be the tv, right click on the number 2 and select attach, then adjust the resolution from the bar to match the optimal resolution of the tv posted earlier.

let me know if you need furhter assistance.
Thanks,
Ekse

after you have done so the tv will only show your background picture, to move programs etc into the television drag them out from the side of your Monitor number 1 to the direction where the number 2 would be.

Hi,

You can go into the set-up menu and set the resolution to automatically change with the broadcast you are watching..however by setting it on automatic is makes changing between channels a little slower, because the DTV receiver searches for the native resolution for a couple of seconds....I got used it...

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

Black band down centre of screen

Try to see if it is not a issue caused by using a wrong resolution ..In this case if you use one with a small size height ..may cause a black band on the bottom ...so ..open the display settings ...and under the resolution ...choose one by one ...untill you get to one which fits your screen and such ..If this seam not to work ... it may be a corrupted driver..In this case download and reinstall the driver for the video card ..This will fix it if there is something wrong with the driver..If after reinstalling the driver and choosing different resolutions will not make it right again ..you should consider the display being permanently damage d ..and look for a replacement for i t..
to check if it is a display damage ...try to hook up the external monitor ...(secondary monitor ..vga out ) ..Just plug another monitor you may have around in the vga port ..and enable it from the driver ..If that black band appears again ..it means there is nothing wrong with the display ..but it something from the video card ..or operation system ..First try to reinstall it ..and than look for video card replacement ..or in case it is a built in video card ..and can not be replaced..and also has no slot for other card to be installed...you may consider to get a external card on fire-wire or usb ..for to be able to use it proper ..(will be tricky to make the wiring for the monitor ..but will work with an external one .
lets hope it is nothing that serious and will work ..

Laptop to TV Connection

Check if you are sending the signal to the external monitor. On my laptop with Windows 7, I can right click on an open section of the desktop and choose Graphics Properties. In this window, I can choose to send the display to the laptop's internal monitor, the external monitor or both.
Pressing Crtl-Alt-F1 will force the video onto the external monitor on the fly (Crtl-Alt-F3 goes back to the laptop's screen).

When I have added a second monitor to a desktop, I needed to reboot and allow new hardware to be found before the related Screen Resolution (right click on the desktop again) let me find the second monitor and choose if this was a duplicate or extended screen.

I hope this helps.

I have purchased an AOC 22" monitor to connect to my laptop >>>>>i have connected it but it does not display. What is wrong.

Depending on the laptop. Most have a key on the keyboard to toggle external display. Usually, you have to hold the function key [FN] then push the external display toggle.

External monitor does not work

The screen resolution for the laptop may be set too high for the monitor. Try to change it to a lower resolution to test it out.

Akai 32LW7 _connection to Laptop

Hi,

I believe that you have connected it correctly since the Windows log-on is displayed. It may be that the Screen Resolution of your desktop is a bit high and therefore would have to be lowered to match the capacity of the Akai 32LW7. Pls try 1366 x 768 pixels or lower. You could also lower the laptop's screen refresh rate. Additionally, some laptops have to be toggled to activate external VGA by pressing Fn + F? keys to cycle through LCD, LCD + external, External only. The F? key would be the one with the monitor icon.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Data Shows up only on External Monitor, not on Laptop Screen

If your system won't display anything w/o the external monitor. there's something wrong with the LCD's backlight. you may have to contact your laptop's manufacturer and check if this laptop is still under warranty. you may have to get the lcd replaced.

thanks.

Setting correct screen resolution for external monitor

Instead of looking to the laptop drivers, try looking for the monitor drivers. If there aren't any, then research the video card for the machine to see if the specs you have are wrong. If there aren't any drivers for the monitor, then the drivers at Toshiba's support site should work, since they don't, I'm going to say it's in the video card.
