Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD 120 Passport

I have a WD 120 Passport that has lots of my personal data on it. I have tried it on 2 different laptops that used to recognize it, until the past 2 weeks. I've tried on different USB ports as well. The unit is working as I can feel the drive running when it is plugged in (which I was able to do in the past as well). The blue light is on, in the drive, but I'm not able to find it thru Windows Explorer or thru Computer management. Please advise.

Chances are that you might have to unplug and reconnect the sata line inside the case. There are many different reasons why this could be happening but the best way i can say is to start small, i.e., the lines to the HDD, connectors, etc. Now if that doesnt work disconnecting it all together from the case and connect it directly to the computer tower. Remember you have to restart your computer for this to be reconized. If this still doesnt work it will be internal on the HDD. It is possible to repair it but REALLY delicate. So if you decide to do it yourself make sure you have either a ESD strap or mat to do this on and DL Guides on how to take it apart for troubleshooting. Hope this helps ya and good luck

Try each of these methods step by step if solved in any step get backup ASAP
the good news is: if the LED is ON you may have a chance

1.Use Minimal cord, detach all other USB's, check your power2.Turn off power options3.Try Restarting your system4.Carefully Try system restore3.Download & update Firmware software from WD website4.You may need to Install SmartWare_Windows_Upgrader first5.In any step if the hard drive was recognized back up your data immediately6.if none of above You will need experts having PC3000 to get your data back
the bad news is that: if the LED is OFF or PC3000 doesn't recognize your hard drive you may need a new exactly the same hard drive with the same SN to replace it's board to get your data back.

unlike other brands which use laptop hard drives, that can be plugged into a PC directly, WD uses it's own board with access services on the hard and if the board is damaged you may have a serious problem.

this is a problem I have been through.
unfortunately the "lovely WD my passport" is Totally Not Reliable and you can not count on it.

First stop using the drive. If you do use it Windows may overwrite your data with any new files you create.

To recover your data you can try a program like Recuva. http://www.piriform.com/recuva

If that does not work you will need data recovery help. This guy does it remotely over the internet and works off of donations. http://FreeDataRecovery.us

Can't retrieve data

Be sure to use the WD supplied USB cable to connect the drive. I had a similar problem with my WD Passport 320 and was told that using a cable other than that short 8 inch cable can cause some odd operations.

My computer does not recognize WD Passport WD2500XMS-00

I use a USB extender cable so I do not have to get down on the ground and plug stuff into my USB ports behind my computer. Everything that I own works through this cable except the WD passport drive. (It is a 2.0 USB cable at that so that is not the issue, plus 1.0 should theoretically still work, just not at 2.0 speeds)

SO...I tried to plug it directly into the USB port on the back of my computer and it worked instantly.

Other people have reported a fix after finding that their cable was loose. This USB cable that comes with the drive seems to be picky for some reason. Perhaps these are faulty cables somehow. Hopefully this will help some people.

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.
