What version of OSX are you using? Is this opening the lid or full power up? Which model? Go to Apple :: About this Mac :: More info ... and give us the "Model Identifier". The more you tell, the more specific answer you will get. -Ken

Take it to an Apple Genius Bar--make appointment, especially if a long drive. Generally we will need more info on your model, too. Go to Apple :: About This Mac :: More Info.... Check the Model Identifier: and Hardware :: Power tab report the Cycle count and the Charge remaining in case it is a battery problem rather than the display. -Ken

Is it a blue screen? If so try this: Apple Support "Leopard Blue Screen"
