Hi,

In order to troubleshoot this you will have to provide a clear description of the problem.

What make is the computer and how old is it?

What OS are you using e.g Windows Vista, XP ?

Is the computer freezing when you are using a particular program e.g Word or IE?

Have you downloaded any programs from the internet lately?

Have you got an up to date anti virus program installed?

Please be more specific and I will help you to resolve the problem.

    Ok.

Thats annoying. First of all I want you to boot into safe mode. Safe Mode is a way of booting up your Windows operating system in order to run administrative and diagnostic tasks. When you boot into Safe Mode the operating system only loads the bare minimum of software that is required for the operating system to work.

Windows Safe Mode loads a basic video drivers so don't worry if your programs may look different than normal.

F8 - Press the F8 key right when Windows starts right after you hear your computer beep you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode. If it does not work on the first try reboot and gently tap the F8 key after you hear the bleep to get to the menu.

Once you have started it in Safe Mode., I want you to go to System Restore. System Restore is a tool that automatically monitors and records any changes that are made to the core Windows system files and to the registry. If a change causes your system to become unstable, System Restore can undo (or "roll back") the system to a point in time when your computer was known to function correctly. Note System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Before we go any further do not do this until you let me know is it Windows Vista or XP you have or what is the operating system you have in your computer?

Ok. Have you managed to get into safe mode also?

When you go to restore - is it asking for the second password before it will allow you to proceed?

If you are managing to get the menu up when you press F8 as the computer starts you can try this.

Instead of selecting safe mode use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration and then press enter.

Let windows load and let me know if that resolves the issue.

It could be a number of issues. Over heating, faulty memory, or other fault.

to improve the airflow in your latop use canned air to blow dust out form the fan and the holes that the laptop has.

Memory could be tested with a memory testing software.
http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

this software is started from a cd or a floppy, it needs to be burned into a cd or written into a floppy
http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm

the computer needs to start the cd to run the test, to start from the cd, look at the screen when powering the computer up, it will say on some part of the screen to press Button to enter bios or boot menu, if you see boot menu press on that button when the message is shown and ones you are on the boot menu select the cd drive and press enter to start from it.

if you don't then you would need to edit the boot order in the bios

here's info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php

let me know how the memory test goes.

If the test is OK and no errors come up, then I would suggest that you do a fresh installation of windows to your computer from either the windows xp installation cd or the recovery discs that may have come with the laptop.

Aside from cleaning the machine from dust, the other thing was ment to be done on another computer.

Not sure what you are asking for.

Computer freezing can be caused by a number of things. Does freezing occur somewhat randomly? Or only when you use a certain application?

POWERS UP BUT THEN FREEZES AFTER ABOUT 4 MINUTES

Need to test and isolate where it exactly freezes? After dell logo, after windows logo or while inside windows? Now, if it only freezes inside windows try to turn off your windows updates and antivirus first and check if still freezes, if yes then try booting in safe mode, reboot system then keep tapping on f8 once dell logo appears. Check if laptop keeps freezing in safe mode. Please let me know.
