Could be the inverter. If you connect an external monitor to it and it works that would be a good way to see if it is the inverter. The inverter is a ccfl cold cathode fluorescent light basically a long thin fluorescent light that illuminates the lcd. If you take a flashlight and shine it on the screen when it is on you may be able to see the computer is actually working and the lcd is ok. It is not that expensive to replace the lcd. It is however a little challenging.
ifixit.com shows step by step how to fix or repair or replace anything on the mac.
You backlight needs to be replaced. In fact it could be caused by your inverter as well. Try the inverter first, it's cheap and easy to replace. If you want to do it yourself, the good
news is, it's not too hard to open it. Here is a Macbook Repair Guide that shows how to open an Macbook. Just open it and let it try, clean off any corrosion you can find. If you want somebody else to do it for you go to iPad Repair NYC.
could be your inverter board, whitch controls the backlight. I could very well be the backlight as well, but that is less likely. Inverter boards are not all too expensive, and if you are knoledgable with laptops, i would say doit yourself, but if you have any doubts, take it to apple, sur it will cost more, but it is the safet bet.
Try starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key. That will be a start to get you into the System Preferences, find your Power Saver preferences and turn Sleep off.
Hope this helps!
Most likely the LCD inverter board is defective (relatively common).
Although, before you go to the store try this:
1. Start your mac in "Safe mode"
follow these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
2. Install the latest OS X (or make an update)
Have you checked the software preferences of your sound editing software? Seems to me there are some options to reverse the phase with in certain software applications.
Apple doesn't provide voltage information for the Inverter Board. If you are getting external video then check to see if there is a dim (un-backlit) image on the display to ensure it is a backlight problem. If so then the chances are good you have a failed inverter board.
Under normal circumstances this should be covered by apple's warranty. I had a similar problem and apple changed the power supply without any questions. If you have an Apple Store in your area, you should schedule a meeting at the genius bar.
