Check the blade on the mower. Make sure it is tight and that the shear pin has not been broken. There is a shear pin on the crankshaft that keeps the blade from turning along with the nut that holds the blade on. designed to break off if you hit something with the blade. That is so it doesn't bend the crankshaft. Also make sure that the starter works and that the gear that turns the flywheel has not broken off a tooth.

SOURCE: Toro ride on mower won't start

Try replacing your spark plug. If that fails then go to the engine, cheak your carb, lines, and gas. cheak for gum in the engine/carb. If gummed then get carb cleaner and spray twice, wait 1 hour then try again. If my solution fails then you might need expert help. Good Luck!

SOURCE: craftsman riding mower repair starter will spin but not engage

You need to buy a Starter Drive Kit. If you starter has a flat piece on top held on by a retaining ring, it's part # 696541. If you have the older type starter with roll pin holding the drive on, you need part # 696540. You probably have the first one. To install the retaining ring, use a 3/8 socket to tap it into the groove. Dwain

SOURCE: mower won't start spark plug turns black

Black carbon fouling on the plug is a sign of the engine running too rich, start by replacing the air filter and plug and try again.

My husband was mowing with an Exmark Quest riding mower and ran over an extension cord. It stalled and won't start again.

The flywheel is locked to the crankshaft with a aluminium key. If the engine is abruptly stopped this soft aluminium key will shear off and let the flywheel turn. The shaft quits turning and the flywheel don't. This is to avoid breaking the crankshaft. When the flywheel turns or spins on the crankshaft it puts the spark timing out of time and will not run, it might backfire or spin and stop or just spin over.

Riding mower makes fast loud whirring noise and wont start

Starter bendix is bad, starter is turning, causing the whirring sound, but bad bendix isn't pushing the gear up to mesh with the flywheel teeth. Repair bendix or replace starter.

The last time I used the mower, it was running fine then cut off while I was mowing. I haven't been able to get it restarted. I changed the spark plug, filled the gas tank and added oil. It still will not...

Maybe the ignition module is gone bad. It helps fire the spark plug to make the motor to run. Also if it has a stop cable on it make sure the cable pulls back far enough to pull the flywheel brake off the flywheel.
If your mower was running then quit, it sounds like the ignition module bad.

I have a craftsman 12.5hp riding mower. went to mow and a very loud noise came from the mower. sounded like i ran over a huge piece of metal. i had shut everything down and it would not start up. there was...

I would check to see if you can rotate the fly wheel by hand. Also check to see if the blade(s) move easily (with the mower off and key out get under tractor and try to rotate the blade if it moves freely then great if not then you have other issues). Report back so that we can go from there.
