The tv will turn on just fine but after about 5 seconds after the display has come up the whole screen just goes black. Everything else works fine, i can change channels/inputs, audio works great, etc.

Hi coefremont, This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. The very
common caused of this fault is the leaky
electrolytic capacitor in
that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and
will disable the unit.It needs a little warm-up to make itself stable but the
symptom will get worst like what you've experienced right now. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better
that you have a capacitor
checker/tester to determine
its condition. Your unit will back to normal again if the leaky capacitor is
isolated. If you don't have necessary tools
and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to
look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't
attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored
electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only. Also check if your unit is under warranty /extended warranty,
avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free. Don't open
the back panel, this will void the warranty. Hope I helped you. Have a nice day! Thanks for using Fixya.

Hi,
Problem seems with lcd panel (screen) and most probably T-Con board located on top center of lcd panel and covered with shield (basically it is part of lcd panel) is cause of problem.
Click Sjhopjimmy.com link to view related T-Con board image and price info.
I hope t-con board replacement will solve tv problem and if that does not fix the problem then lcd panel would be replaced that would cost you approx new tv price.
Please note that t-con board replacement requires prior experience of electronics stuff repair. Back cover of tv need to be taken off to get access to t-con board and flexible ribbon wire coming from lcd panel must be handled with care to avoid any damage.
Hope these info will help.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Your backlight controller is probably faulty. Check for bad capacitors. It may be one or more inverter transformers which is faulty, inwhich case it is usually easier to replace the whole backlight
controller board.

The fact that the screen illuminates properly and does not stay absolutely pitch black means that the backlights are working properly.
A faulty LCD Controller Board (or TCon board for short) could possibly cause the symptoms you describe. The Tcon board is usually located under its own RF shield and will have a large braided steel multiwire cable coming into the bottom of the board and several flat ribbon cables connected to the top by little plastic flip up connectors. A replacement board can be purchased on Ebay for around $70 plus shipping. See the following link for one example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-CONTROLLER-V320B1-L01-C-RCA-L32WD12-/360142646595?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53da2cad43
Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the item information at the website indicated.
Just don't buy any that say AS IS for their description of condition. That is EBay speak for broken.
Make sure they say TESTED FULLY WORKING in the item description.
The best way to be sure you are getting the right part is to open up your set and check the part number that is printed directly on the circuit board itself. Then look that part number up on the internet or type that number into the EBay search box.
Just typing in the model number of your TV will sometimes give you a few different part numbers so you have to confirm which part is in your particular set.
Make sure any part that you order online has exactly the same part number as the one you are replacing. Sometimes it it just the last few digits that are different and it can make a difference.
