SOURCE: 04 grand prix shuts off

possibly the crank sensor, it will make the car shut down for no apparent reason. then the car will start after it sits for a bit.

SOURCE: '97 Grand Prix 3.1L...Head Gasket? Manifold? Control Module?

Hi Melody- it feels like you could be right. it feels like your car was well worn when you got it. common causes of overheating are coolant too low, which is what i suspect was the case when you first got it. a stuck closed thermostat not allowing coolant to circulate. i assume you have an electric cooling fan- check to see if your fan motor is fried. you could also have large air pockets inside your cooling system which can give false coolant level. when you pour coolant into your radiator rather than your overflow tank, you introduce air into the cooling system that has to be purged by allowing the bubbles to work their way out through your radiator by squeezing your coolant hose you can assist the escape of these air pockets (with engine running) evidence of a cracked head can be presence of coolant in your engine oil-pull your oil dipstick and look. you say no evidence of coolant leakage, however, look underneath your car and check to see if there is coolant splatter surrounding the underside. it maybe that your car is maintaining enough pressure to run but when engine temps reach a point to where the radiator fan should kick on, and/or the thermostat should open to allow coolant flow and these things dont happen-the result is what you describe with no power and overheating that will eventually overstress your head(s) warped heads can cause the symptoms you describe. you can perform a compression test to help pinpoint a blown cyl. an idea for fixing your car for cheap would be to take it to your local high school auto shop. the only way kids learn the trade is by subject cars. ill bet you can even arrange them to pick it up. the will fix your car for cost. you would only need to supply whatever parts are needed to make the repair. its a win-win situation because they get to learn by fixing your car and you get to use your car for doing mommy things without fear of labor fees. which are around $120/hr. I hope i have helped you with your car good luck!

My Pontiac Grand Prix is also a 99, it has 216,+ thousand miles on it, it runs great, idles good, I need to replace the oxygen sensor tho as it shuts off on me while driving or sometimes coming to a stop. You might try checking the fuel filter and pump as well.

Lost power smoke exhaust

If it is a 6 cylinder inline then catalyst is plugging up a easy test would be to remove a oxygen sensor and see if power returns to normal. V-8 models have 2 types of manifolds plastic and metal the metal ones have a plate bolted to the bottom which the gasket splits and sucks in engine oil causing all sorts of drive ability issues the plastic versions more trouble free but PCV ventilation system can cause smoking

Why is my Grand Prix surging/stalling when ideling?

If you did not disconnect the battery and drain the voltage from the ECM, it could be using old settings when the problem existed.
When a problem occurs, the computer tries to correct it or find new settings to work around the problem. When you fix a problem you have to clear the codes and sometimes erase the memory from the computer to allow it to start back at the factory settings.
When you disconnect something and the check engine light comes on, the computer goes into limp mode and uses values for the sensors preset by the factory. The car will almost always run rich to ensure the driver can get back to a place for repairs.

Grand prix has a 3.1 6cyl. and 166000 mile, it blow white smoke

Sorry to inform you of the bad news but the white smoke is engine coolant burning off and the rough running condition is also associated with coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. This will be a head gasket repair, basically a head job where you will need to machine the heads down and install new gaskets from the heads up.Get back to me if you have any more questions, thanks and I hope I could help!!!

I have a 98 grand prix 3.8L and sometimes it's hard to start. then sometimes going down the road the tach goes to zero and the speedometer starts swinging while the car is trying to stall.

If the vehicle cranks normally when not starting check the tach see if it is reading any engine speed. Sounds like the crank sensor is going bad very common fault on the 3800 series 1 & 2 engines. You must remove the harmonic balancer to replace the sensor.

Power steering fluid on grand prix

You should add it to the power steering pump reservoir, which if you have the 3800 series II its behind the engine on the passenger side.
