Autofocus has failed on the CAnon EOS 40D. I can power the camera up with lens in manual but as soon as I go to autofocus it becomes unresponsive. The viewfinder goes black. Swapped batteries and lenses. I've had this body for five days. It is a canon refurb. I will also be contacting the dealer.
It's not the Autofocus, there's no 'non-engineer' fix. Lens and slider have failed, it's basically broken inside and I suspect it was the original fault. It's about £160-200 outside of warranty to fix via a canon authorised repair agent such as www.camera-repair.co.uk in Colchester. Send it back, get your money back.

My Canon 40D locks up when I click the shutter and the blue printer light next to the menu button is flashing. All the LCDs go blank and all functions stop working . Originally I was using a vertical grip and it still would not come on when I took the batteries out but after I detached the grip the camera did come back on . Now I'm not useing the grip and I still have take out the batteries and re-insert and turn back on camera to make function work again. Everything looks normal but the same thing happens again once I click the shutter. I've tried this on manual and automatic setting but the results are always the same. I have no desire to print anything so I'm not sure how this light even came on. The manual tells how to print but not how to deactivate this feature. I've scrolled thru all the settings on the camera menu but don't see anything related to this. Is this a camera setting or is my camera broken?

I have a Canon 40D and I have it set to autofocus, but my pictures are never really clear. I compare to pictures shot with other cameras and they are so clear and all of mine just have that "soft" look which is not always desirable. I am afraid I goofed by purchasing a Canon.
