It will work fine as a spot cooler if he has direct airflow on him, otherwise it wont do much for cooling the building.

We have an older swamp cooler and need to have some windows in our home open to get best cooling. Does a mastercool need to have some windows open in our home to give max cooling?

The solution is to install "up ducts" These devices are easy to install and are fairly cheap. With a swamp cooler the best way to use them is to allow them to draft outside with the "up duct" you get the drafting to the outside but also get to remove attic heat too.

I have a mastercool cooler and i need to clean the pads. in the past i have tried soaking in a clr solution but it dont help. any tricks to do this would be great. the calcium and other deposits just stay...

CLEANING PADS
My pads are 3 years old. (1) I tried soaking them in Vinegar & water which helped. (2) I then sprayed them with a hose nozzle, that helped also. We live in AZ so the dust storms can be horrendous and I still had build up. (3) So I took a variable speed drill and a wire brush and removed more. (4) Then ,as these filters are made of a wood by product, I took a belt sander ...they look good now. (5) Now when I reinstall them I am going to change the pads so pads facing outside will be facing inside, keeping the 45 degree forward and down. This last step I haven't tried, but it should work.

Best way is to get a sheetmetal shop inyour area to make one for you.. Give them the exact size of the opening and then tell them you want a 3/4" flange all the way around and make sure the duct connection is what you need.. Let us know if you need anything else.. please vote.

Mastercool evaporative coolers have bulky deep filters, which are clogging up with minerals, etc. Does white vinegar remove much of this, or, is there another solution. New ones are expensive & run...

I USE A PRODUCT CALLED TRIPLE D COIL CLEANER LIQUID NOT THE FOAM, BUT THE FOAM WORKS GREAT ALSO. YOU MUST USE A SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ROUTINE IN ORDER TO BENEFIT FROM THIS TYPE OF BUILD UP. YOU CAN GO TO YOUR LOCAL HVAC DISTIBUTOR, YOU DON'T NEED ANY CERTIFICATION TO BUY THESE CLEANERS, AND YOU CAN EVEN ASK WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU AND HOW OFTEN TO USE THE PRODUCT.

We have a Mastercool II & it was installed ~ 3

The pads you need are at least 8 inches thick. If you have the contractor model, then the pads will be 12 inches thick.
Find a distributor in your town that sells cooler parts, if they dont have them, some of the big home improvement stores carry the pads for your cooler.
Make sure you are using a bleedoff or a dump pump to eliminate the hard water out of the cooler. If you keep those pads clean, they wiil last for many years.

New Mastercool pads smell bad

The cellulose pads in a mastercool are glued together and usually the adhesive is what you smell. It may take a while for it to go away. Strange as it may seem, as the pads get more mineralization and you use it more the smell will go away. Do not use a cooler for your whole house without plenty of exhaust through a window or an updux. Coolers work best when there is plenty of freely moving air.

Cooking oil in cooler motor?

Not a good move; cooking oils leave a sticky residue as they evaporate; you can try this yourself in a skillet over low heat (or in the oven) for an extended time, motor oil does not. Heat generated by bearings can accelerate this and eventually cause the shaft to seize.
