Question about HP Photosmart C4180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

11 Answers

HP Photosmart C4180 part identification

The printer gives message "print cartridge access door is open" on LCD. Door closes snugly and there is no obvious blockage in the cartridge bay. I think I have identified a possible source of the problem. I have removed the casing to the left of the bay and I have found a loose piece of plastic that looks like a lever or latch, see pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/auroraeclipse1/3674844107/in/set-72157620771071022/
I would be grateful if anyone could identify the item, and where it belongs, as I would like to get the printer working again.

I have added a photo of the printer to the photo stream, can you tell me where it fits?

can anyone tell me where the part fits?

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

no unfortunately the message on the LCD, as above, appears.

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

is there anyone who can tell me where this part fits in relation to the fuser assembly

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

neither of the last 2 links offered show where the lever/latch can be re-located.

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

as the latch has become separated, I want to re-attach it. do you know where the latch is attached to the sensor with reference to my photograph ?

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

does anyone have hands-on experience with repairing HP printers?

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

thanks nLinked, unfortunately the design isn't close enough to the machine I have to help, but that's the sort of picture I need to relocate the latch.

  • cm2009 Jun 30, 2009

thanks MNfisherman, what you say makes sense, but there is no place to attach a spring on the bottom of the door panel, and no sign of damage there, would another photo help?

  • cm2009 Jul 01, 2009

emissionwiz in most cases, and with this kind of fault, I would agree with you that a new one would be purchased, but not this time.

  • cm2009 Jul 01, 2009

does anyone have a picture, or pictures, of the inside of the HP C4180?

  • cm2009 Jul 02, 2009

the message about the cartridge bay door only appeared after I had removed the casing and so I think the latch was dislodged by me in the original opening of the casing. So I do not think any sensor has been damaged, just that the latch has been dislodged.

What I need is a picture of the inside of a C4180 in order to put it back in place.

As nobody seems to have one available, then I'll just say thanks to one and all for your time and suggestions.

  • cm2009 Jul 04, 2009

as before, the lid is off the machine the printer paper path is free of any paper, and paper can be passed through it manually without any obstruction.

the displaced latch is the problem, where does it fit?

Actually friend there is a problem in your printer that needs to be replace but just try this because we encountered a such and it works with this: 1. remove and firmly put back the power cable. 2. reset the software of the printer. download it free from www.CSutility.com 3.re install the printer driver. and if still it doesn't work sad to say you need to replace the printer.

There is a sensor that tells the on board processor that the printer door is open, it is either defective or the circuit it sends this info to is defective, the thing is with these printers it is more expensive to fix them than to just get another one, have seen this over and over, you may disagree right now but the end of this scenario will be u buying a new unit when u conpare the repair codet with a new one that is problem a better machine, it's up to u. i show the cost of a new one at about $150.00

Posted on Jun 30, 2009

It does look like a lever used for the sensor. I was going to describe it, but I have just managed to find a document with pictures that might help better. Although its for a similar printer, the theory should be the same. You might be able to get it back in place under the sensor area. The document I found his here.

Hope I have been of some help in locating the missing piece's area.

Best regards

Sorry forgot to say, if you go down to Step 3 and 4 on the document at the bottom, it shows the lever in place and when it's missing. You may be able to fit it back in.

The latch is attached to a sensor inside. Either the sensor has a short or open circuit, or there is a fault with the printer's firmware

The latch has a spring that attaches to the bottom of the door panel. The tension of the spring tells the printer whether the door is open or not.

Follow the steps below until the issue is resolved. All of the following steps might not be necessary to resolve the issue.

    Step one

    • With
the unit still powered on, open Cartridge Access Door and look for any
foreign debris. Remove any foreign material that may be obstructing the
      seating of the access door.

    • Close access door.

    • If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.

    Step two

    • Open the Cartridge Access Door again.

    • Slowly close the access door while listening for an audible click of the switch.

    • If the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue with the rest of the instructions on this page.

    • If the issue is not resolved, and/or there is no audible click, continue to the next step.

    Step three

    • Open the Cartridge Access Door and look into the mid-chassis opening to see if the metal lever is present.

    • If the metal lever is missing, then it cannot properly trigger the switch and the sensor is faulty. Continue to the next step.

    Figure 3: Metal lever present

    Figure 4: Metal lever missing

    Step four

If you have completed all of the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the HP All-in-One.

How do i fix a cartridge jam?

Hi andmary,
While using the HP Photosmart C4180, the printer may display error messages. These messages alert you, as the printer's user, to any problems affecting the printer's performance. The printer can display the message "Carriage Blocked" on the printer's display screen, stopping any current print jobs and preventing you from printing anything until you resolve the problem. The error message can be caused by an actual obstruction, such as a stuck piece of paper, keeping the cartridge carriage from moving freely inside the printer. Sometimes the error is a result of a software error.

Instructions:
1. Turn off the printer, wait 15 seconds, then turn it back on. Press the "Setup" button on the control panel, then use the arrows to highlight "Print Report" and press the "Ok" button to print a self-test page.
2. Remove all the loose paper from the printer's input tray. Turn off the printer and open the back door by depressing the tab on the left side.
3. Pull out any stuck paper, being sure to turn the rollers to check for small pieces of paper. Close the back door and open the printer's front door.
4. Remove any stuck paper from the printer. Move the cartridge carriage from the left to the right side of the machine, removing anything that stops the carriage's movement.
5. Push down on each cartridge, then pull each one out of its slot. Replace the cartridges in their slots, then push forward on them until they each click into place.
6. Plug the printer back in and turn it on, then unplug the printer's power cord from the back of the machine and the electrical outlet. After at least 15 seconds, plug the power cord back in and turn the printer back on. If the problem persists, take the printer to a repair shop.

Hope this helps.
Thank you for using Fixya!

Try resetting the printer:
Reset the printer
-Disconnect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable from the back of the printer, but leave the printer turned on.
-Open the cover of the printer and remove the print cartridges.
-Close the cover and wait for the Insert Ink Cartridges message.
-Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and wait for one minute.
-Reconnect the power cord. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
-Open the cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
-Close the cover. If prompted, print a calibration page.
-Reconnect the USB cable, and try to print a print job from the computer.
Hope that helps!

Error message: "Door Open"

HI there,
Follow the steps below:
Step one: Close the print cartridge access door
1.Verify that the print cartridge access door is completely closed. It may appear to be closed, but if it is not completely closed, the error message will display. Verify that there are no obstructions blocking the door.
2.If you are unsure how to close the print cartridge access door on your model, consult your User Guide for more information.
Figure 1: Examples of closing the print cartridge access door (your model may vary)
f3e57be.gif If you have attempted to completely close the access door and the error still appears, there may be a problem with the door sensor and the unit may require service.

Step two: Service your product
If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

Good Luck!!!
