Have you been inside the case or has it taken a good jolt. This is usually caused by a piece of hardware not seated properly in one of the slots, usually RAM. Make sure your external hardware such as batteries, DVD drive, etc is seated properly. Also if you were adjusting the brightness controlls on the screen, you may just have them dimmed to the point that you can't see the screen.There several things that could cause this problem but without knowing such things as what you were doing when the problem started or what all the computer has been through since you were on it last it's hard to troubleshoot.

My HP Pavilion dv9000 Laptop powers up but screen stays black. Keyboard lights up and you can here the computer running.

Connect it to an external monitor to see if it shows video.If it does the display panel needs to be replaced.If it doesn't show video the video card is most likely malfunctioning.The HP dv series are bad about having video problems due to heat and depleted thermal grease.Hopefully it will show video on the external monitor.

I have a hp laptop. was on line and screen went black. and will not show again. it strats up sounds but black screen.what do i do

1) Do you have a VGA monitor that you can use for an external monitor?
{VGA monitor is also referred to as a CRT monitor. Looks like a small TV}

The back of the laptop, or side, has a VGA port. The VGA monitor is plugged into it.
{Laptop off}
Then the VGA monitor is turned on, and allowed to 'come to life'.

Now turn on the laptop. Press the Fn key down on the keyboard, and hold it down.
Now press the Monitor toggle over key.
Since you did not state the HP laptop Model Name, and Model Number, I can only give you generic guidance on this.

The monitor toggle over key has a monitor screen symbol on it. It will be one of the F keys.

(It's an External Monitor toggle key.
Press it one time and the display toggles over to an external monitor.
Press it again, and both the laptop LCD screen, and the external monitor have a display on them.
Press it once more, and the display goes back to the laptop's LCD screen )

If display shows up on the external monitor, you have a problem with the display of the laptop.

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is used as an additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp {Bulb}
Similar to the fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

{Average Backlight is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil.
The Backlight is located on one edge of the LCD screen}

An Inverter is used to provide power for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.

Inverters are relatively cheap, and if I knew the Model Name, and Model Number of your HP laptop, I could give you a link to HP Support where you could download the Service Manual for free.

This way you would have a manual to show, and detail how to replace the Inverter, and I could guide you.

I could also give links for your perusal for Inverters.

There is one more thing however.

HP Pavilion DV2000, DV6000, and DV9000 series laptops, have a graphics chip overheating problem.
The laptop comes on, the blue indicator LED lights light up, but the LCD screen is black.

This video explains why, shows a solution to fixing the problem, and details out a lot more than I am privileged to state here,

Hp dv9000 switches on to show coloured lines on screen.

Hello

My first guess is that the screen circuitry has gone bad - although fixable. Use an external monitor to verify this. If the external monitor is fine then the screen circuitry is bad, if the external screen shows the same problem then the video chip or associated circuitry has gone bad. My company fixes these all the time.

My HP Pavilion DV9000 turns on, but hard drive does not fire.

This is most likely the beginning stages of a video failure which is a known problem with DV9000 notebooks that have the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 Go Video Adapter. HP has issued a Limited Warranty Service Enhancement and your computer may qualify for free repair. Check out the following link:

Hp dv9000 will not start up. blue lights are go

you get a black screen right, nothing at all then no bios, no logo, nothing at all?
Do you get any beep codes and if so in what order?
did you try different ram?
First try to plug your laptop to an external monitor. If it works, you screen is bad, if it doesn't you probably need a new motherboard.

Making a fairly confident presumption that your laptop is an AMD-based unit, model is....DV9205, DV9310, or DV9410

HP issued a service alert 07122001 covering such AMD-based laptops with your wifi failure, as well as additional failures within your product line. This is a warranty enhancement that will cover the replacement part and labor for you the customer.

HP has very recently started phasing out their older models like the 9005/9010, as the issue alert is basically good from 2yrs of date of purchase.

2 solutions for you....

1) Call HP and give them the serial/model info and inquire about that service alert # mentioned above, see if your laptop is still covered.

2) Replace the motherboard yourself and at your cost

(ok maybe another option)

3) Get a USB wifi card :/
