You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. mrsrobins849, if monitor manufacturing date (on rear of unit) is anywhere close to 2003-2004 then trade unit for new wide screen only if problem of flashing "menu" goes away when you connect a borrowed substitute monitor to your pc. Will your monitor "act" same when connected to "known-good" "fully-booted" pc that will display the WIN-desktop?? Most problems with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" "back-lit" lcd monitors can be attributed to their internal or external "switch-mode-power-supply" DC voltages degrading over time with use.

Try unplugging everything you can from the computer. Only leave keyboard, monitor, and power cables connected. Then try to turn on again. If computer boots now, then start adding peripherals back one at a time, rebooting each time. when you get the hang, there is your suspect peripheral.

Also, is the monitor itself having issues, or is it the computer? Look at the power light on the monitor, is it staying green, or is turning back to same color when it is in standby state?

Sounds to me like bad caps on the power board or main board.

The monitor is faulty for sure. Bring it back to the shop and tell them the problem is still happening and ask them to leave it on connected to a computer overnight since it takes a while to happen. They should see it happen and then troubleshoot it further.

It's quite possible that the mother board (your main circuit board) and/or display adapter was damaged. Your only recourse now, most likely, is to contact HP. Good luck!

Connecting a different computer that works to it doesn't fix the problem(what does that mean, its not CLEAR at all)
my guess is you meant the new PC fails on this bad monitor , too.


ok the monitor fails on PC #2, sure....
so the monitor is bad, why ask for help, buy a new monitor.

but there is one thing to check the very old monitors from compaq
ive answered this 4 times here now.
has menu botton
see that? push that now on the monitor
see that menu..
? one menu selection , has silly horrible, power saver timer on it
and a RTC clock that keeps time of day, (pc can be OFF)
if the power saver is on , get it off now, and if paranoid set the clock.
id set it. so its double safe, see?

page 18 there, page 16 real.
if it one , the INANE thing will go to saver at odd times.
later this was removed for VESA , update, remote sleep rules. and time.

the connecter of monitor will not fit wrong way it can fit only right way so no possibility to damage the monitor

There are also 5 or 6 bad Capacitors on on top but as far as i know the only way to fix these power boards is to replace the componets themselves as you can not buy a power board.

OK All these Compaq's have a Power Supply problem, or a Horizontal Voltage problem.. meaning they are on the way out. The SMPSU's in these units often fail along with the Horizontal Drive Circuitry. I think it is time for a new one? Repair of such a unit would barely be "Ecconomical" IMHO.
