That usually means there is a system password that needs to be entered. If you do not know it, you must remove the CMOS battery from the laptop and reset it.

When turning my laptop on all I get is a black screen with a lock symbol in the upper left corner, requiring a password

Ufortunately there is no easy solution for this problem, the bios is password locked preventing window startup. Removing the main and the cmos battery will not work because it retains the information regardless how long the power has been removed. If you are the original owner you can contact IBM to have your password remove for a fee, the other possibility is to check out ebay sellers who offer this service, but be carefull some don't deliver as promised. The only other approach is change the motherboard or replace the eprom chip ( 8 pin ic )

My IBM Thinkpad ( w/ Windows XP) has a black screen with a lock symbol in upper left hand corner! What do I do??

Hi

Thank you for your query

Your laptop waiting for a password. That screen is the startup password screen. You enable or disable this password in the BIOS of the computer. Unfortunately, you will need to know what it is to disable it.

The only other way around it is to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard and leave it out for approx 10 minutes to clear the BIOS

I would not recommend that you take apart the laptop, but book the laptop into a reputable PC shop to investigate further

BIOS password needed , locked out with black screen, padlock in upper left corner of display

This is a security feature to keep a thief from using a stolen computer.
Find your original sales-receipt, to prove that you are the original owner of the ThinkPad, and telephone IBM, and ask them for assistance.

IBM thinkpad t42 boot up problem.

The most common reason is memory.

First, try to reseat (remove and reinsert).

If still a problem, test one module at a time.

Hope this helps.
