There is a "starter" solenoid that closes when the ignition key is turned to the start position.
Follow the positive (red) battery cable from the battery post to the solenoid. If you have a 12 volt test light or volt meter, check to see if you have 12 volts on the battery side of the solenoid then turn the key to the start position and see if you have 12 volts on the starter side of the solenoid.
I believe you have a starter solenoid that has gone bad.
Good luck, let me know.
Regards,

This is a Troy Bilt Big Red Horse Tiller. Wont crank. new battery. ignition switch good. starter relay clicks when ignition switch turned. jumpering the relay makes the starter spin.

The starter solenoid/relay clicking can mean a bad starter solenoid/relay or bad grounding. Not knowing what engine you have as they have used Kohler, Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton over the years. hope this helps

Sometimes the fuse is located off of the starter it would be an inline fuse like half turn clip or maybe under your seat. Good Luck...

All riding mowers have a seat safety, blade engage safety and a brake clutch safety, some mowers have a reverse mowing safety. Seat under the seat, blade and brake you will have to check the linkages underneath, and if there is a reverse mowing one I have seen them near the shifter handle right under the fender.

Hi. Go to any auto parts store and get a can of starter fluid. Have a helper squirt a little into the air cleaner while u start it up. Then continue to squirt the starter fluid to keep it running until the engine sounds good again. J.

Brand new, troy-bilt chipper model 4265. put oil in engine filled it with gas and tried to pull the recoil starter. It's locked up. I could lift this unit in the air with the recoil starter.

Sounds defective. Even if you could fix this problem something else is bound to go wrong. Troy-Bilt has a reputation for quality products and I'd suggest, since it's brand new, you get it replaced.
