Question about GE Profile Spacemaker Over-the-Range Microwave
My husband tried to replace a burned out bulb on the underside of our GE Profile Spacemaker XL1400 microwave, but the bulb broke. It looks like the screw part of the bulb is rusted into the socket. (Yes, we have it unplugged.) Any advice on what we can do?
is pretty common and can be a pain. It's tacked in place with contact cement or hot glue,
and sometimes there may have been enough moisture to corrode and seize
You could heat it up (hair dryer, maybe?) then use needle nose pliers. Be careful if heating so you don't burn anything.
You may be able to put the tips of needle nose pliers inside the broken bulb's socket, gently but firmly force the pliers jaws apart and then rotate the pliers to loosen it.
Another cool trick is to put a big glob of hot glue on the end of a stick or dowel, then shove it into the broken base and let it cool about 5 minutes, then turn the stick.
I like to put a little WD-40 or rust buster on the threads of the new bulb, too. Grease, Vaseline, cooking oil, or anything like that will work. Just a thin coat.
You should check your light sockets for a short, to, before you put in new bulbs.
Once you have the new bulbs in, the cooktop lights still may not work.
We see (and repair) this a lot. This problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so.
At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.
The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or no bright, too. Sometimes this will similarly affect the exhaust fan operation or inside light, too.
Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.
We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
