Re: vgn a230

The security chip should draw an extremely small amount of power. So the answer to your question is no.

My sony vaio vgn n230e/b laptop won't recognize a new replacement therea sony program that could be disabled or turned off?

If you replaced the battery from one of the many sites that promise complete compatibility with the original OEM battery with specs that meet or exceed those of the OEM, you're on the wrong track. They don't work in my experience. Sony has a proprietary chip in their battery packs that identifies it as an "original" The battery sites state that you have to update the BIOS drivers to make it work and if you have Windows 7, it will be problematic. I've gone through this several times, and what I've had to do is do a restore to a point prior to installing the software that the battery site provided. Although I received a notice that the restore was unsuccessful after it had been run by a system restore CD that you should make; I received notice that the restore was successful after reboot. I then ordered the battery from Sony, installed it, and all is well. Best advice is to be very circumspect in getting batteries from any source that says they are brand new and are completely compatible. A place I know to go to replace bad cells is or (same site). They replace the cells, leave the original chip, and the computer sees it as an 'original' Sony battery.

I have to remove the battery pack and reinsert it

have you tried holding the power button down for about 5-10 seconds to manually shut down laptop? make sure the system is up to date with the current updates and clean out the system using your antivirus program. also try microsoft security essentials if you dont already have it.

I have a Sony Vaio CR VGN-CR353, one of the keys (apostrophe) doesnt function, the rest are fine. Please help to set this right. Soundar Rajan Mysore, India

Hello and thank you for using Fixya!

This can be caused by a couple of things; either dust, liquid spill or just malfunctioning of the chip on the bottom of the key.

You can try a few things to see if it resolves the issues:

First, get a can of air from any electronics store and turn the laptop at an angle, facing down. Blow the keyboard with the air to remove dust and debris.

If there was a liquid spill or splash on the keyboard, you may want to try and gently pull the key off and clean with a small rag and a little dab of alcohol. Make sure the laptop is unplugged before attempting this.

If the problem is a malfunctioned chip under the key, you will probably end up having to order a new keyboard and replace. You can visit the manufacturer's website for the service guide free and see if this is something you can do yourself.

Please let me know if this helps and thank you for using Fixya!

Does anyone out there know how to install memory upgrade module into the Sony Vaio VGN-TX650P. Sony's website won't tell you because they only want sony products installed by sony technicians. Therefore,...

there is likely a small rectangle shaped cover on the bottom that looks like it should come off with the removal of maybe a screw or three. there may be more than one cover but if you know what a memory module looks like then you'll immediately know you have found the right cover.

the existing memory chip (or chips) will have been snapped into place and you should see a spring action type thing on either side of the chip that you have to pry away to get the existing out and put the new one in.

usually with laptops the memory chip goes in at an angle an then you press down to snap into place (you'll know if it's seated right).

check back if you've found the cover but aren't quite sure how to proceed. once you do it you'll pretty much know forever how to. :)

Sony vaio vgn nr120e no power

hmm well i could of helped you if that was the problem, but that has me stumped could be anything, i can run through some diagnosis tests to try and narrow down the problem tho, 1. turn the laptop upside down and remove the panel which has the ram cards (ram cards are rectangular chip boards relatively small with 6 or so little black microchips on them in a row or just google it) under it and remove the ram cards then try turning it on. there any noticeable damage to the laptop such as damge around the battery and charger ports? 3. try turning it on without the battery in at all just the charger. sorry if any of these didnt help
