Greetings john mark,
It looks like the remote you have originally came with a few differnt DVD players from Sony. There appears to be directions for setting up the remote to work with a TV is on page 52 of the owners manual found at:

Happy channel surfing.

SOURCE: SONY Remote Control - some buttons do not work.
Usually this means the conductive contact on the back of the rubber pad has worn down and cannot connect the circuits on the remote controls main board. There are several ways to fix this.
#1 Find some conductive adhesive or paint and carefully paint the back of the button tab ( let dry completely)
#2 Rear window defogger kits are available at most reputable auto parts shops and contain a paintable adhesive which you can apply to the back of the remote control button.
#3 try super gluing a small piece of aluminum foil to the back of the button tab.
I have used all 3 and they all work good.
SOURCE: I have a Sony remote, RMT-D243A, that doesn't work.
With batteries in, hold the Enter button and the 1 button at the same time for more than 3 seconds. This should solve it. It essentially sets your remote into the proper command code.
This remote is designed to control the product that it originally came with. If the remote has buttons for other product types (TV, DVD, etc.), it can control only Sony branded versions of these products. Please note that this remote may not be able to control all models of these other Sony product types.
