How does one go about restoring the default configuration of a Netgear GSM7224P, without the password? - No password --> can't log on via serial console or web; - No "factory defaults" button, only "reset", which doesn't seem to change the config no matter how long I hold it down. - Ctrl-C to console during boot enters a command mode, but I can't find documentation on it.
Leave it to me to find the answer right after I post the question. As it turns out, you have press the 'Q' key at a certain point in the console boot output, to get to the boot menu. On earlier models, there was a clear "press 1 to boot, 2 for the boot menu" prompt. On these later models, you have to "just know" when to press which key. And if you don't, you may have the pleasure of searching online for a few hours until you stumble upon the right combination of keywords. :-/
In any case, here is the link, hopefully saving the rest of the Internet thousands of man-hours of fruitless searching:
How do clear the password on managed GSM switch with firmware 10
SOURCE: GSM712 Netgear Switch password reset or recovery
As far as I know, you'll need Netgear's help to recover the passwords and they'll only help if you have a Premium support contract.
Try "1234" as this is the default if password protection is enabled.
Good luck!
To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the login password or IP
address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
Connect to the wireless router by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or the router's LAN IP
address (default is 192.168.1.1) in the address field of your browser and then press Enter. A
login window opens:.
Enter admin for the router user name and your password (or the default, password).
