Depth usually inop although occasionally works even at higher speeds ?
SOURCE: garmin gpsmap 550s is it
i think it is not compatible with the in-hull zero degree rise depth transducer p72
SOURCE: Depth Sounder does not display depth
I will see if I can get mine off the hull for testing. Still have found no procedure. Thinking about just replacing the sounder with another unit.

Sounds like the transducer is installed at the wrong angle or in such a way that it is getting a lot of air from something on the hull. If it is a transom mount, check that it is angled correctly and not too close to the motor or aft of some kind of thru-hull fitting that will cause turbulence.

My garmin suddenly was doing the same thing. After 5 days of fristration my wife disconnected everything at the unit, as did I many times with no luck, and now it is suddenly working.
We had much rain, it is possible water is in the contacts, but just a thought with that one. My guess is just vibration, and the contacts were loose. Also, make sure your transducer is clean from algae and junk, this will impeded image transmission also.

If you nicked it good enough yes it can. If the receiver doesn't detect the transducer, a digital message on the display will indicate this.
