Subsequent to my Nov 14 2008 posting... shortly thereafter, I had returned my Sony BRAVIA KDL-46V25L1 (KDL-46V2500) to Costco. Then, (after trying a 52" Samsung, whose picture was nowhere near as good as Sony in High Def , but that is another story) I purchased a newer (one year newer) Sony BRAVIA KDL-46W4100 with 120 Mhz refresh rate.
What did I find?
The same purple/green image problem (“The Problem”) exists in the newer model Sony as well ! !
I believe the actual issue is with the TV, not the cable box, in that the TV contains faulty logic in in the way it handles switching from one input format to another. Turning the TV off and back on ‘resets’ the TV, and corrects the TV display (at least in the case of my Sony BRAVIA KDL-46V25L1 (KDL-46V2500) and Sony BRAVIA KDL-46W4100).
That action should have little impact on the cable box output.
My Shaw High Definition cable box has two output options for HD: Component RGB, or a DVI output. It came with an RGB cable, and a DVI / HDMI cable (DVI end for cable box, HDMI for TV).
When I use the Component RGB, my TV does not have “The Problem”; everything is fine with all the various cable box output settings I have tried.
When I use the DVI / HDMI cable, I get the “The Problem”.
“The Problem” only appears under one specific set of conditions as noted below....
My cable box can be configured to handle output for standard definition (SD) channels in one of four different formats: Nothing, 480i , 480p, or STRETCH. (where ‘Nothing’ lets the signal pass through as-is ).
ONLY when the cable box is configured to send SD channels as 480i does “The Problem” arise.
The TV has an issue (bug in video logic?) handling the switch from 1080i to 480i, only when using the DVI / HDMI cable between cable box and TV.
IE “The Problem” only seems to occur while using both the DVI/HDMI cable, AND when the cable box channel is changed from a high definition 1080i channel to a standard definition channel AND the cable box is set to convert the output of the SD channel to 480i .
By changing the cable box to send SD channels as ‘Nothing’, or 480P, or STRETCH , and “The Problem” goes away.
Or, using the Component RGB cables, and “The Problem” goes away !
Hope this helps.

go to your menu select color, select user, and adjust RGB from user. same level R-60, G-60, B-60.
SOURCE: Red Color not working
Does this only show up in one connection IE: HD cable box, DVD player etc, If connected to a HD cable box a loss of red can mean a defective red component cable.
SOURCE: RED COLOR NOT coming on TV, showing green all over place
I also have a samsung 40 inch. Try hitting the menu button on the remote the scrolling over to the right once and scroll down and hit pictures reset to see if that works. If it doesn't check your connections coming from the back of the source and the tv itself.
