Tip

Surge Protection

Here is a few tips to look for in a good surge protector:

1. Response time should be less than 1 nanosecond.

2. Energy absorption/dissipation should be at a rating of 600 joules or more.

3. Clamping voltage should be 330 V to 400 V. Generally, a clamping voltage more than 400 V is too high.

4. Get one with a an indicator light that tells you if the protection components are functioning. All MOVs (Metal oxide varistors (MOV) are semiconductors that protect electronic components and systems from transient voltages) will burn out after repeated power surges, but the protector will still function as a power strip. Without an indicator light, you have no way of knowing if your protector is still functioning properly.

5. Get one that has self test function. A button you push to test it.

I had a power surge about a month ago and now my wii will not turn on. My wii is pluged into a surge protector.

I posted this elsewhere on here too, but I'll post it here too so it helps you.

This is a common problem with the Wii. You wouldn't believe how often I read about this. I'm very surpised Nintnedo didn't cover this in the owners manual FAQ, considering it happens almost every time there is a power surge or the power goes out, etc.

Even if it's hooked up to a surge protector, this happens. Power comes back on, but the Wii appears dead. It won't turn on, and the LED indicators won't light. If there was a power surge, or the power went out, etc...anything, this will happen. The problem is with the AC adapter, not the Wii itself.

There is a circuit inside the AC adapter that needs to be reset. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall/surge protector outlet. Don't unlpug it from the Wii, it has to be at the outlet. You have to kill power to the adapter.

Unlpug it from the wall/surge protector outlet, and leave it unplugged for 5 or 10 minutes. This will kill power to the AC adapter, and give the circuit time to reset. When you plug the adapter back into the outlet after 10 minutes, the red led on the front should be lit up.

Power surge hit my surge protector with my 'sony tv hooked to it.

Well, the power supply may be still damaged by the surge, what may happen is that when first surge happens the surge protector protect your TV by sacrifing itself but then the second surge comes along, since the protector already blown up then the surge will just come right through to the TV on the second surge. That is bad problem for the surge protector that sacrify itself but can only do it for ONE time.

My daughters xps 200 won't start, she presses the button and nothing. She has checked the surge protector that it is pluged into and it is OK... is there a reset button is there was a power surge??

most surge protectors have some sort of on/off switch and a reset button. If there was a surge then you would need to pres the reset button to get the surge protector to function again. If there was no surge then try using the on/off switch on the surge protector to see if that helps. Also try simply unplugging the power cord from the back of the desktop while the computer is turned off. This will sometime also help.

Error code - protector

Try disconnecting all the speakers from the back and turn the unit back on. If the "protector" display goes away, turn the unit back off and reconnect one speaker. Turn it back on and check for "protector". Repeat.

If you find that one of the speakers causes "protector" to appear, you either have a bad speaker cable or bad speaker. Try swapping each of those out to see what happens.

I would just go buy another battery charger pack. They are like 75 dollars to buy. Sounds like yours might have a short in it!

Computer power won't turn on

First thing to do is try to plug the pc in another wall socket to see if it goes on, If not, the MB could have gotten fried, even though the other plugs seem to work. Hopfully you just need another surge protector as that could have gotten damaged.
