Sound out of one speaker only

Probably due to damage in the headphone port, sound will only play out of the left speaker. This is with any set of headphones, so I know the headphones are not the issue. Is there anything I can do?

i only get sound out of the left speaker and not the right with evrey earphones what to do?

  • laurengrace Nov 08, 2007

I think I have fully damaged the connection between the ipod and the headphone jack by using a slightly too-long headphone jack (although still 1/4"). I inserted the headphones, pushed them the wrong way, and now the ipod runs perfectly but absolutely no sound is coming out! is there a way to have this physically repaired?

Sound out of only one speaker/headphone (the left), can get sound out of the right if I really jam the headphone jack in. Ugh, so annoying. This is the second ipod this has happened to, anybody know how I can avoid damaging the headphone jack?

only have sound out of left ear phone. have tried several new headphones and earbuds. nothing seems to give me that great sound back :(

  • amg478 Nov 13, 2007

Hey, I have the exact same problem, supposedly it's caused by wrapping your headphones around the device too tightly, causing stress on the headphone jack.

No matter what I play it out of, whether it be headphones or speakers, only the left speaker works. The same goes for my car. I have the black 30 gb video idpod as well. What can I do?

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2007

At first I thought it was my headphones, so I went out and bought a new pair. It turns out its the same problem with the new ones. Only one ear works. So we assumed it was an internal problem. I'm not sure at all what to do. Please help.

I think it's probably a damaged audio jack. If you're still in warranty, get it off to Apple. If not, you've got 3 choices;

1. Attempt to fix it yourself. I managed to get stereo again by opening the ipod up and inserting a staple in the bottom of the jack, to fit between the headphone and the ipod's audio input. This took some fiddling around, using tweezers, and will probably not last long if I take it out somewhere. I might attempt removing the audio jack and seeing if I can bend the metal connects for the right audio channel so they touch the headphone cable again. An alternative to this method would be to put some cardboard in the audio jack socket and adjusting it so that it brings the hardphones back into contact. Someone did this and posted the results on their blog, but I forgot the URL...

2. Buy a new audio jack and replace it yourself. There's an ipod repair wiki out there, and several of the replacement jack suppliers have detailed instructions. It's about 40 UK pounds for the replacement though....

3. Get someone to repair it. Expensive, about 60 quid, but perhaps worth it if you're scared of further damaging your precious beast.

Note though that there have also been issues with software updates and audio output, search the apple discussion boards for more details...

Short of actually repairing it, you can pick up a mono to stereo adapter for a couple a bucks at Radio Shack...

In diagnosing, I noticed that the damaged speaker side would give sound if the headphones were held a certain way. So,I jammed in a couple of short stands of speaker wire to make up for the slack. It worked immediately. My father taught me this trick in another context. Thanks dad.

One workaround (not cheap) is to buy the iPod Radio Remote, which plugs into the dock connector and provides another headphone jack. (However, this makes your headphone cord really long, and while this solution worked for me for a few months, now the Radio Remote itself seems to be broken in the same way.)

The cotton solution above is a waste of time I´m affraid. The reason you headphones are cutting out is due to mechanical wear of the jack.

Happened to me too. I only get sound out of one earphone, unless I hold the part that goes into the jack in a certain way. Lame indeed. I guess I'll be dealing with Apple now.

I actually tried the cotton solution (dipping a mostly stripped QTip into alcohol and swabbing the jack, then allowing to dry). So far it has worked. Why not give it a shot? The question becomes, what are you willing to try before dropping some serious cash on sending your iPod to a repair person?

I am having the same problem, sound from left speaker only, but right bass working, problem occuring in several devices that I connect to. Figured I might as well try I different output cable from my iPod, and problem solved. My initial cable (non working) had one black ring on the pin .. my cable that works has two black rings (apologize, I am not a techy so do not know the lingo).

I can only hear out of the left side of the headphones. They are only 1 month old and they worked fine at first.

Hi Terry,
if the headphones have removable cable, try another cable to check the cable connection to ensure it is ok, also check your headphones in another device to ensure it is not the device is causing the problem. also check your balance settings are central on stereo devices the balance can be set left and right. if the cable is fixed try moving the cable over the whole length with music playing to see if the speaker makes any noise at all this indicates the cable is broken, as your headphones are only 1 month old you have full garantee from the maker, as long as you can show they have not been damaged through rough handling or overloading with too loud sound. it can happen that new headphones fail shortly after purchase due to component failure or weak connections.

I hope this was useful.

Sound coming through right headphone, but not through left. Sound also not coming through left speaker. Help?

are you adjusting sound through the windows controller or the application you're playing music through? there are a few things that could affect that, there's also the actual sound setup where you can change your setup i.e. surround sound, single speaker, headphones etc

Cant get to play music without headphoes

Most modern computers come with internal speakers already installed, especially laptop computers.
These speakers may be sufficient if you are performing typical computer tasks, but when you play computer games, listen to music or watch movies on your computer, you may want louder and more vibrant sound.
You can achieve this by installing external speakers or headphones. These can be connected to your computer through the speaker or USB ports included on your computer.

Plug in the speakers or headphones.
If the speakers or headphones use a stereo plug, insert the plug into the speaker/headphone port normally located on the side or front of your computer.
This port is often color-coded green. If the equipment is connected using USB, locate a free USB port.
Some external speakers will also need to be plugged into a power outlet in the wall or your surge protector.
This may be all you need to do to get the speakers or headphones to work. If they do not, continue to the next step.
Open the audio settings on your computer.
From the Windows Start menu, open the Control Panel. Here you will find audio and sound settings.
Click the heading to see your sound and audio options.
Choose "Manage audio devices" in Windows 7.

Find your Playback device.
In the Playback tab, you can select your speakers and set them as the default for your system.
If you do not see your speakers or headphones, they have not been installed properly. Disconnect and reconnect them to see if it corrects the problem.

Configure your settings.
Select your device from the list and click "Configure" to test your settings.
You can adjust the volume by using the volume slider on your computer's task bar or using external controls on the speakers or headphones.

Can't get the headphone sound working from the laptop

The Laptop has 3 Ports on the side- Pink,Green,Black
Pink Port is LineIn for an external device player jack

Green Port is LineIn for the Microphone jack
Black Port is LineOut for Headset or External Speakers jack

Plug the Green jack on Headphone - into the Black Port on the laptop.
b) Go to Control Panel and open - RealTek HD Audio manager
On the top of Page are 3 Icons -

One Icon is labelled Speakers One is for Digital optics, one is for Mic,
The Speakers Icon is misleading as it is also for Headphones (LineOut)

Select Speaker Icon and make it Default. Also tick Full Range - Front LR
Ignore the 4 vertical Analog Icons on the right side.

You should now have Headphone sound if your volume is not Muted.

click start control panel on the left select hardware and sound then select manage audio devices then recording you should see a microphone right click select enable windows 7

click start control panel on the left select hardware and sound then select manage audio devices then recording you should see a microphone right click select configure speech recognition then

you will see earphones with a speaker among a list set up a microphone headset with microphone then next and next again you should see your earphones with microphone being configured

click start control panel sounds and audio devices select advanced there might be a tick in the mute box untick it or select audio from the microphone drop down list

make sure you have the right one selected and in the volume box make sure the microphone box has a tick in it or

select the voice tab

make sure that you have the right media selected also

select volume make sure the box for microphone has a tick in it

or you might have to depending on your operating system
Click start Control Pannel
click on Hardware and Sound

click on Sound
then you devices should come up ; speakers, Digital Audio, and headphones

plug your headphones in
then select headphones

at the bottom it will say set as default
select that!!

then when you disconnect your headphones it automatically switches to the speakers and when you plug them back in it automatically will switch to headphones

Hope this helps.

I can not hear sound headphone and speakers

If there is not any sound, it could be due to either the audio settings or the lack of audio drivers.
To test sound, you'll need to go into the control panel and click on the "sound" icon. If when you try to play sounds the little preview arrow is gray, then the sound drivers are missing.
If it seems to be playing the sounds but you hear nothing, then the speakers are probably muted. Check that. Also check to see that the speakers are good and that they are plugged into the correct port (should be the green one).

Headphone jack must be moved around to get right speaker working

You will find that sound comes from the right side speaker only when it is bent at a certain point. By trial and error you can roughly locate the point. Then you can cut the wire at that point, cut 1 inch each from both ends, strip the cables, and connect the conductors. What has happened is, due to unusual bending, the conductors to the right-side speaker has damaged (broken). After roughly locating the place and removing 1 additional inch each, you will remove the wire section with the broken terminal. Now you can strip the wires and make the connections again. If you are not good at stripping and soldering wires, better to to take it to an electrician. (You need to take only the headphone pin and parts attached to it). This repair won't cost much. Good luck!

Sound won't work without the earphones being plugged in

Make sure the speaker volume is turned up and also go into Control Panel, Sounds and make sure nothing is muted and all volumes are turned up. Also make sure the speakers are plugged into the sound jack in the back of the pc. The speakers also need power but since the light is on, it sounds like they are plugged in.

No Real Time Sound from USB Port in Headphones

The problem is due to the design of the DELL Laptop itself. It is not dsigned to monitor the incoming signal. I bought a cheap Behringer UCA202 USB-Audio Interface. It provides for real time monitoring the incoming sound. I can also hear the accompanying music while I play along with pre-existing tracks. It's not the highest quality but it was only 25$ so well worth the price.
