Sounds like a dirty carb. Is there a cup on the bottom of the carb with a nut on the bottom? If so take it off and clean it out as well as blow the orffice out thats on the bolt you take out.

SOURCE: My craftsman mower with a 26 hp kohler dies when choke is in

carb dirty, jets partially plugged, float sticking. Not so uncommon problem and is caused by the fuel left in the carb over the winter gumming up (going bad). You can attempt to clean this on your own if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. Search small engine repair and it will give you a generic breakdown of the parts in a small engine carb. If not the, to have someone overhaul a small engine carb will run you about $120 including parts (at least around VA).

SOURCE: Craftsman Kohler 26 hp starts and runs for 10 seconds with starting fluid sprayed in the carbureator then stops. How do I keep it running

first you need to see if you have fuel going to the carb then you need to see if it is going threw the carb there is a solenoid on the bottom of the carb that shuts fuel off to the jet if you have no power to the solenoid that will keep it from running also dirty old fuel sitting in the carb will cause the carb rto stick closed so if you have power to it remove it and see if it is opening

What to do? I have a craftsman GT 5000 with a 25 HP Kohler and it will run for about 10 minutes and then start cutting out and die. I have changed the fuel filter with no resolve. What should I look at...

Make sure the choke is coming off. Check the compression. Many times the head gasket may leak when the engine heats up. Also check for spark sometimes the magneto can heat up and quit after running a while. See if it will run if you prime with a little fuel, if so ,some of the Kohler engines this size have a fuel pump that could be failing. Check for vapor lock. It takes air and fuel properly mixed, spark and compression any of these missing the engine dies.

What makes a mower lose fire?

need fuel, spark and air. Make sure air filter is clear. Best way to test this is leave it off while you try to start (or restart??). For spark, easiest way is to spray starter fluid in the carb. If it starts, you have a fuel problem. If you havent lately (or ever?), change the fuel filter.

Hi, first check the oil. If it smells like fuel, change the oil. Secondly if oil smells ok, check the valve clearances and adjust if incorrect. Let me know if the oil smells like fuel and I will help with a fix to stop it happening again. Regards Phil.
