Question about Dell Inspiron 1521 Notebook
I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 with 4GB of RAM and a 320GB 5400rpm hard drive. The whole unit gets very hot. I installed Speedfan 4.38 and although it cannot control my fan (which is running non-stop), it does say that it's running between 140F to 170F. When the temp climbs much above 150, any video becomes choppy and the overall laptop performance becomes buggy.
I recommend you check your air vents for dust buildup. Use an old toothbrush to clean the dust off the outside of the vents and then use one of those cans of compressed air meant for cleaning keyboards to blow air through the vents to dislodge any dust accumulated inside. Some laptops have more than one vent. Make sure to clean all of them. I once worked on a Sony laptop that I had to take apart to clean out all of the vents.

Testimonial: "Their advice was right on the money. Blew out the vents with canned air and the laptop went back to working at a reasonable temperature."
