Its the spring, which I have that attaches to the walking foot. Once its attached it goes to the walking foot on the piece the slips under the walking foot to keep it above the fabric. If you have pics or a diagram that would be very helpful. Thanks K graham

You have to unscrew the presser foot, then attach the WF, using the same screw.
Make sure the lever on the WF rests on top of the needle bar clamp.
Some WF have a two prong lever and this fits around the needle clamp like a lobster claw.

The plate is not screwed in, it is held tight by a couple of metal springs on each side. Just take a small regular screw driver and gently pry up the face plate. You may have the presser foot lowered by the switch on the right side of the bobbin/shuttle area slide it so the presser feet raise.

Try making sure that the thread is all the way in the tension disk then test it out. I had a similar experience with an old machine.

There are a number of sites that offer the Instruction Manual for a fee. See the following:

I was able to find a free download of the Instruction Manual for the 1473 if that would be of any assistance:
http://s2.vsmgroup.com/VSM/Pfaff/pfaffmanual.nsf
Not sure if these will have enough information to help with repair but perhaps the 1473 manual will give you an idea whether the information you require is likely to be in the Instruction Manual before you purchase.
SOURCE: I attached the walking foot , but the needle will sew through the fabric
this is what my instruction book says
Lo---a button is pressed when the machine halts due to overload
wait for at least 15 seconds to recover
if thread jamming causes overload, remove the tangled threads
