So what do you know about the router? Do you know what IP address you have? Can you go to 192.168.x.1 and see the web based interface?

You will need to configure your router:

1. Open your Browser and in address bar type in 192.168.1.1.

2. Username and password are the same - "admin" (without quotes) for both.

3. You will find the Wireless Security Tab & from here you can choose your encryption preferences - best to choose WPA rather than WEP - it is safer!

Hope this helps.

So, you log into the router at 192.168.1.1 by opening up IE and typing that address on the address line. The username is left blank and the password is "admin" by default.

When it opens you will see tabs, one of them being Wireless.

Now, here's where you have to ask yourself what type of security you need and why. Easiest, and least secure is WEP. IT's also the easiest one to recover if you lose your key. If you're just trying to stop freeloaders, it will work...for a while. I've kept my neighbors out of mine for at least 2 years, but the kid next door is getting better.

In the simplest, you can always set SSID so something, disable the broadcast, turn on WEP and set the code to 1011121314 or FACE123456 (10 hex characters 0-9 A-F). Be sure to change your router password to something else besids admin and you're on your way to wireless security.

The Linksys website has a tutorial on Home Wireless Security. Follow the link to your router and click on the LEARNING CENTER link on the lower left of the page http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G/download

Good Luck,

Carl

Need to secure router via laptop

Hi Thanks for your question
I think my tutorial may help you with this please click this link----> http://www.fixya.com/support/r4695161-change_wireless_network_password_forgott

Because of the fact that you can connect to your network without cable since it's unsecured you don't need to connect by cable. Skip this part and carry on with going to the routers settings site then to router wireless settings and password change. Remember to choose WPA method of security. Good Luck and please let me know if this was any helpful.

For that you need to reset your router to factory defaults.
Then reconfigure fix this problem.
First RESET your router to defaults.
for that press RESET button for 10 seconds RESET button is in back side of router.
Then connect your router to computer with ethernet cable.
Then you can access it with following link.
http://192.168.1.1
or
http://192.168.0.1
type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password"
Then you can see configuration page of router.
Set WAN settings as your internet service provider settings.
Enable DHCP .
Click on wireless and enable wi fi.
If you want secure router then enable WEP security then add new code it is your password key for connect wi fi.
Also change channel type in wireless option 4,6 and 11 channel are best.
Try 1 by 1 then save settings and restart router.

Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks.

Can't get a wireless connection from my Linksys WRT54GC router

I think you have the router setup to not broadcast the SSID. Go to your router settings to change this option. By not broadcasting, it enhances security for your wireless network, because it looks like there's no network. I hope this helps!

Change from 'unsecure' to 'secure' router

You don't need to install anything extra to secure the network. It's a matter of changing router settings. You set up the router through your web browser by going to "http://192.168.0.1" which accesses the device's setup screens.

There are several revisions of this product. Here is the URL for D-Link's selection page for the router:

http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp?productid=di-524

Click on the picture that shows the version you have, and then you'll be taken to the page for that version. You can download a manual or look through the FAQ's which will guide you through the process of setting up the security.

Wireless router connection unsecured

Open a browser and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1
It'll prompt you for a username and password, if you used the Linksys Installation CD, remember the username and password that you provided. Else, leave the username blank and key in admin for the password.

Once inside the router, click the Wireless Tab then the Wireless Security sub-tab.
Enable and choose WPA Personal and provide a password for your wireless network at the WPA Shared Key section.
Click Save settings at the bottom.

Your computers will need to reconnect to your network and asked for the security password.

SECURITY ISSUE ON LAPTOP- UNSECURED ON NETWORK

You didn't specify what router you are using and what type of connection. I assume you are using wireless connection from your laptop. What you need to do is setup security on your router. I can't give you any specifics because I don't know the model of your router. Please read documentation and try to go to wireless security on your router and setup 64-bit WEP then specify 10-digit code. Save your configuration. Try to connect your laptop to the network. If it prompts specify the same WEP security then enter the same 10-digit code. It should work.

Good luck!
