When the charger is plugged into the unit, look at the main menu screen. If the charger is working correctly, the green battery icon in the upper right-hand corner eill go out. If the charger is plugged in and there is a light lit on the charger but you see the green battery icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen on the main menu, then the unit is on battery power and the battery is not getting power from the charger. Common problem with these units are loose rear USB ports. More information can be found here:
The proper vehicle power cables for the Garmin nuvi 260 are part numbers 010-10723-06 or 010-11478-03. The use of improper cables will cause the nuvi to go into mass storage. You may also want to contact Garmin Support for assistance. http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact
Sometimes the satnav goes into mass storage mode, when plugged into the charger, and shows the unit connected to a computer because the charger plug is not pushed in fully to the back of the satnav. It appears to be fully in but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.
This usually happens when the charger is not compatible with the unit. or you could be using a non-Garmin charger. There are some "store-brand" chargers that work well, and some do not. Store brand Charger are made to be Universal. To fit multiple devices and maximize profits. You want a Garmin Specific Charger, and here is the logic why...
The reason behind it:
1. The Garmin USB Cable that you connect to your computer has a special 4-pin configuration telling the GPS that is is connected to a computer. This is the configuration most "generic" chargers use to maximize device compatibility.
2. The Garmin Car Charger has a different pin configuration with 2 less pins, giving it only positive ( + ) and Negative ( - ) to charge the GPS.
When the GPS receives the 4 pin, which is also found in a "Motorola" Cell phone charger, it will automatically sense that it is connected to a computer.
Long winded, but I wanted to explain why. Simple fix, Just go get a new charger and make sure it's Garmin compatible.
I connected the unit to the car charger instead of the USB charger and then held down the reset for 10-15 seconds, after which the system would show the computer connection on the charger and then boot up when not on the charger.
Had the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 260w. It just needed to be reset. Lift up the sticker strip on the bottom of the unit and press the reset tab. Worked like a charm for me. HTH!
Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said.... "when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device" That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery. There is only a mini USB port on a 260. It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
