Latest firmware?? Where download?

If the boot disk came with your laptop, it should have the necessary drivers on it. You cannot burn drivers on your CD-Rom boot disk because it is not made of the material suitable for laser burning. Even if it were, it would have been "finalized" and the CD writer would not burn it.

First of all, you have to enter the BIOS Setup to see if the drive is detected. If not, then you have a hardware problem, loose connection or bad drive.

Boot to your C: drive and go to the Toshiba link (above) to download the drivers. Then install the CD-ROM via Control Panel>Add Hardware route.

hope this helps

I changed the hard drive in my m400 and i doesnt load windows says somthing about a dianostic disc! what do I do.

You haven't said whether you installed Windows from the original factory discs which came with the laptop. If you haven't done that yet, open the cd tray and put the 1st disc in. Shut down the laptop. Reboot the laptop and it should boot off the disc and ask you if you want to "format" the hard drive. At this point you should be able to follow the on screen instructions until everything is loaded, including all hardware drivers. Any other software you had on your old drive will need to be reinstalled on this drive from the disc. If the software is old you may want to go to the appropriate website for the driver and download the newest version. That should complete your install. Let me know if you need more help.

The cd rom keeps popping back out

What operating system do you have ?

Try reinstalling the Toshiba drivers that came with your computer. You need to have the original CD drivers for your Toshiba Satellite.

If you do not have these drivers, try downloading them from www.toshiba.com look for your specific model and have them ready before uninstalling the driver for the CD rom

Windows xp compatible?

It's a bog standard CDROM drive, there's nothing about it that's not XP compatible. Check and make sure the connectors are seated properly. Check the firmware, there is an update, try http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R20018&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=19847 This drive is reported to have CD-RW issues, but everything else should be fine (I think the firmware fixes that) If your still having problems, its' probably a bad drive.
