SOURCE: Dell laptop pointer problem
Hi,
This is a very common problem for most Dells this age.
You can try this repair if you feel comfortable.
Remove the keyboard by removing the power button bar (just gently pry up from the right side working left)
re-insert the mouse cable which is coming from the pad/palm rest. Re-assemble.
Check if all the screws on bottom of the unit are tight, especially around the palm rest area.
Good luck

Try reinstalling the gpu driver. If the problem still persists, the screen may be going out.
SOURCE: No volume or sound for my Laptop
Please check to see if your sound card is installed/enabled, then check to see if the sound files are set to open with that device. Your computer should already have a media player installed (if you're using Windows). Set your music files to open with the media player.

I am having the same problem with my Compaq. I boot up and I can hear it whirrling and doing its business but the image is blank. It lights up but no image.

OK - hold on.
Before reinstalling the OS here is a quick somehting you can try:
Next time the message shows up. Remove the CD/DVD from the laptop. Give it some time without it and see what it does. After awhile, slide the CD/DVD back in. This may fix it.
