If it is fused at 10 amps, then any power supply 8 amps or greater should be adequate.

Most lithium small radio batteries are 3.6 volts. If AA or AAA batteries, multiply by 1.5 volts. 4 batteries = 1.5 * 4 = 6 volts MAXIMUM. Rechargeable batteries are 1.2 volts. Your charger would be a much higher voltage because it takes power to "push" the charge into a battery. You didn't say, so I am assuming you want to operate the radio with a wall charger. I've done this by soldering the wires to the battery contacts. You need a higher voltage than 3.6 volts, but milliamps is more important. You need enough milli amps to get the radio to transmit. Too much and it frys, literally. So, this is all on you to decide if the risk is worth it. I use a 5-6 volt power supply set on no more than 1 amp (800 ma is my favorite size) 1 amp = 1000 ma. How do I hardwire this unit for an in home use installation?

You would need to have a stable 12 volt DC power supply that plugs into a 120 VAC outlet. You can google these, and they come in quite a few varieties. The most expensive are the variable voltage "lab grade" ones, then the bench grade fixed voltage variety, and then the cheap consumer grade 12 volt 1 or 2 amp device designed for CB's and small 12 volt devices. But this will not work, because you are transmitting and could be putting out 40 or 50 watts with that thing. So you will need a good 10 amp to 20 amp dedicated transceiver power supply, unless you just plan on receiving in which case you only need a couple of amps and the cheapie will do. It's always better to have more amperage in a power supply. You then need to think about issues like back-up power with a gel cell 12 volt battery, which also would allow you to use the cheapie supply, because you would have plenty of current to XMIT from the battery. Schematic shows a very basic 12v - 30 amp supply. Good luck!

Need to know the capacity needed for power supply

Manual specifications: 60 VA for receive, and 470 VA for transmit @ 100 W. Radio will take 100-117 or 200-234 VAC +/- 10% 50/60 Hz.

How much current must the external power supply be able to provide?

To run an HF transceiver (100 W), the radios normally want to see up to 20 - 35 watts of power available at 12 volts. You earlier referenced the FT-990 HF transmitter, which takes a normal AC voltage input from a line cord. Normally a 20 amp circuit would suffice. Since you did not specify if the radio has the internal heavy duty internal AC switching power supply. For an 110 V connection, the unit requires an 8 amp fuse, and 4 amp for 220. I = P/E Current = power/voltage
Therefore 25 watts of power divided by 12 volts if that is the battery voltage, equals about 2 amps. You should try a 3 or 4 amp fuse..

Can you give me any advice on servicing kenwood tk 3207 handheld radios please?


At the onset, basic tools and equipment would include (but not be limited to):
  • basic electronic tools & equipment (side cutter, screwdrivers, soldering station, DVM);
  • a dummy load wattmeter;
  • frequency counter;
  • RF Voltmeter;
  • SWR meter;
  • variable regulated power supply;
  • AF/RF signal generator;
  • Spectrum Analyzer (would be nice but not a necessity).
A copy of the service manual or at least a schematic diagram with voltage readings would be very helpful. Repairs would involve sectoring the handheld into:
  • logic/controller circuitry;
  • RX section;
  • TX section;
  • built-in power supply/regulator circuitry.

No power for Sony ICFCD855V Dream Machine.

Power supply seems to be 12 volts. I have ICFCD855V's and the power cords on both broke just past the strain relief on the power supply. That shorted the supply and blew the fuse (1.6 amp). I soldered in a new fuse and the supply (with no load) puts out 12VDC. Since it happened to 2 in my house I can't believe Sony doesn't have a recall on these things

I recently received a really nice R600 Kenwood.

Hi Doug,

To my knowledge, the Kenwood R600 straight from the box runs only on AC power hence no DC jacks.

However, there is a DCK-1 accessory which is a DC cord kit for this receiver.

Alternately, the secondary output of the transformer is 14VAC which is feed to the bridge diode of the power supply on the PLL unit/board. With that in mind, it would then be OK to hardwire 13.8VDC right after the bridge diode and parallel to the big filter capacitor. It may be a good idea to put an inline reverse protection diode and a fuse. Of course any DC type of jack/plug combination/arrangement may also be used.

Additionally, you might be interested in a service manual for the Kenwood R600 which is available here.

Base radio works when it feels like it.

If the swr does not deflect even you press the PTT it might be the power amplifier has the problem,pls check also your power supply it should be regulated nor constant voltage output....

D23 is the reverse protection diode and it shorting is the primary reason your fuse blew. As you posted, power was applied in reverse, hence other components would also fail. Pls check:
1. D22 - 9.1V Zener Diode
2. TR23 (2SC1096) 9 Volts regulator
3. D19 - 5.1 Zener Diode
4. IC4 (TA7222) - Audio Amp
5. TR14 (2SC2029B/10) - Finals
6. TR15 (2SC2028B/20) - Driver
7. Most capacitors over 220uF (like C123, C114 & C112)
