Vintage Sunbeam toaster repair

Hi,
I have the same problem as the person before me. My 1950's radiant toaster worked fine a nd then all of a sudden was dead as a doornail. I'm amazed that people no longer will repair small appliances! They were everywhere when I was a kid...throw-away world now I guess.

Anyway, forgive my inorance, but do I take the whole toaster apart to look at the insides? I feel like a fool asking this question.

Thanks alot,
Molly

SOURCE: toaster needs new heat coil

Find a comparable model at flea shops, yard sales, or e-bay and take the parts off and install them on yours.

SOURCE: AUTOMATIC LOWERING SENSOR DOESN'T WORK

I found another site that described the fix. On the bottom of the toaster, after removing the crumb tray, there is a screw in the middle that can be turned to adjust the sensitivity of the lift mechanism. Here's a link to the site http://www.automaticbeyondbelief.org/fixing.htm

SOURCE: Hi, The dial on our Dualit toaster gets stuck on

The timer can be rplaced by any good handyman. You can get a new one on ebay there are two types make sure you get the right one. Replace it before someone forgets to shut it off and the toaster smokes up the kitchen. Its a common problem with the dualits but the switch is not cheap and you can only get it from England. The good news is the replacement seems to be better made than the original

Adjust the screw on the bottom which adjusts the tension created by the heaters. If this doesn't work, "bump" it some to dislodge crumbs that may be inferfering with the trip lever for the thermostat.
If nothing works, try kitchenmade usa or toaster central who both work on and fix vintage toasters.

I have/had a similar problem. Here's how I fixed it.
UNPLUG THE TOASTER
1. Clean the crumbs out throughly. I removed the bottom of the toaster (6 screws) to make sure all the debris was removed. Use a soft brush. Replace bottom and tighten screws. 2. Gently brush the sensor area in the 'one slice' slot with a soft brush. 3. Remove 'darker-lighter' knob. I gently pried mine off with a small screwdriver. 4. Plug toaster in. 5. Put a slice of your usual bread in the 'one slice' slot. 6. Watch it toast. 7. When 'done' to your liking slowly rotate the control counter clockwise using a small screwdriver until the toaster stops toasting. 8. Replace knob with the pointer at the mid point (up and down) to allow for minor adjustments.

There could a number of reasons why it has stopped working and depending on the problem it could be a simple fix but generally not. It is after all an old toaster as you realise. On the bottom is a model number AT-35 AT-40 or TA-J. It depends on what part is sentimental as the outside and ends and base can be transferred over to a working mechanism. I have a few of these toasters and think they are just great.
