Agitator and base won't separate.

I'm attempting to repair the dog clutch in our whirlpool. I've removed the agitator and base but can't get them apart to access the clutch.

I had the same problem yesterday, the tech online said that if you look closely there are 4 little thin rectangle holes... it may not look like holes since the manufacture fuses it with hard melted plastic to keep you from yanking it off. I used a flat edge screwdriver and pounded it in with a hammer (like using a chisel). Punch th 4 holes so the plastic seperates from the dog assembly. Place on floor, stand on it and pull straight up!

Thanks to tkemmler for the heads up! I was getting really frustrated from yanking on the mover and not getting anywhere. My wife was looking for TK's response from an earlier google search. I had just noticed the edges of the holes where the hard plastic wasn't completely covering. When I read it, I got the "ahah" moment and within a couple of minutes the agitator was seperated and the bearing and parts were in my hand. Just make sure you get all the hard plastic pushed thru the rectangular holes and it's a done deal. Thanks again..

Agator doesn't work

Is this a whirlpool washer? The agitator dogs need to be replaced. Remove top cap on agitator, then plastic cover inside it, then remove bolt, then pull agitator off. Top can separate from bottom by standing on bottom and pulling up on upper. Go to to find agitator dogs.

Whirlpool: How to replace the dog kit of direct drive washers

How to replace the dog kit in agitator
To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16" bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the upper and lower pieces of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator. Make sure the 4 pieces remain in place while putting the agitator back together.

Whirlpool Duet washer

Many Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washers (including Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, and Inglis) use a 2 piece agitator. There are cogs called 'dogs' or 'dog ears' and a cam between the two halves of the agitator which can wear leading to a clicking/ticking sound and reduced movement of the top agitator section during the wash cycle leading to poor cleaning results. In most cases these worn parts can be replaced without much cost or difficulty.

The top section of the two piece agitator is usually removed by first pulling off the agitator cap then removing the inner cap. Underneath those there is usually a 7/16" bolt which will need to be unscrewed. Once removed, the top agitator half can usually be pulled straight up to access the defective components.

The clutch cam and clutch dogs usually responsible for problems should be found in the now removed upper portion of the agitator assembly.

Although just the agitator dogs are available separately, a worn cam will eventually result in the same failure again. All worn components should be replaced together to reduce the chance of the condition recurring.

Check the above links to know how it is to be replaced..

How to separate auger from agitator. whirlpool ultimate care II

When you look down into the agitator, are there 4 white plastic points that look slightly melted or otherwise deformed? If so, using a small flat head screw and a small hammer, separate the white plastic from the surrounding translucent plastic. Once you've done that, it should easily pull apart.

Agitator not moving--seems loose

This washer has what we call a bionic agitator and this agitator has a 2 parts:
it has a base and a top section.
IF the BASE IS NOT WORKING AT ALL, please have the transimssion checked and also check the coupling.
IF the BASE is working and the top is NOT
THEN replace the 4 plastic AGITATOR DOGS that are in the agitator.

Remove the CAP from the agitator...remove any plastic cap.
Get a socket wrench and get the socket that removes the bolt.
remove bolt...
PULL the agitator from the base and separate the top from the bottom.
Take the top and turn it upside down to remove the platic interior part that holds these 4 dogs. REMOVE the old dos and replace with new and do a reverse engineeriong putting agitator back.

How to remove agitator cam from the upper part of the agitator?

Had same problem with my washer. Check to see if there are little plastic tags holding top/bottom of agitator. after replacing dogs just ensure that you realign with tags so they do not break off.

I have an LSR7233EZ0 and the Agitator slips when you run heavy loads in the machine. Where is the best place to start clutch or gears?

"Where is the best place to start clutch or gears?" Answer= Neither.

What you have is a failed set of agitator dogs. Don't ask me why they call them dogs. I really don't know. Maybe it's because they "clamp" on to a relatively flat surface and the friction of the grip provides the "cam" action... kinda like "plate dogs" in iron work. But I'm speculating.)

Easy and cheap repair. The part number you'll need is 80040 (<--- plug that number into a search engine or call your local appliance parts place). What you'll need is a 7/16"socket, an 8" extension, a ratchet, and (possibly) an 8' pair of needle-nose pliers.

Pull the top off of the agitator. If yours has the "flat top", just pry it off with a knife. Then you'll see a mostly opaque cap down there... remove that (<--- just pull it out). Now use your socket and ratchet and extension and remove the bolt that's exposed down there.

Now lift the agitator up and out of the basket. Place the agitator on the ground and put your feet on the wide part, the base. Then lift up on the "screw"/agitator ... this will separate the two sections. Now pull the cam out and you'll see the dogs (<---the ones that need replacing). Remove them and install the new ones. There ya go!

All that's left now is to rebuild it in the reverse order and you're done.

If you have any questions, just write. If this solved your problem then show some FixYa love and rate it as Fixed!

Agitator (can't get to the dogs)

Not sure if you mean the agitator is stuck to the shaft or the agitator will not separate now that you have it out of the machine, if the agitator is stuck, you may be able to get it loose by rocking it back and forth while pulling up on the base or bottom of the agitator. If you have the agitator out already, then stand on the base and pull up sharply on the top section and it will separate.
