You should first find out whether the remote control you have [for Element TV] have setup codes to set with the Magnavox Blu-ray player. In fact, with no remote control, you can't set up the Blu-ray part of the player, but if you have set-up code to your Bluray brand, You can set it up to control the DVD and CD regions.
Set-up (Programming) procedure is too much to type in here, and is not practical and it will differ brand-to-brand remote controls. If you wish to get more; check the site linked here. It has set-up code list & set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. See it in "Mosaic" or "Magazine" view. It will make surf easier. http://electrohelponline.blogspot.com/
You can buy a universal receiver remote and follow instruction in manual book to set up with your home theater / Bluray player.
I recommend to buy a same brand universal remote with your home theater system so it will easier to pick up signal form your receiver.
OR you can contact to manufacturing of you name brand receiver to buy directly from them a new remote for your home theater system / bluray then you don't have to worry about set up
A Blu-ray player can play DVD or CD and still not play Blu-ray. It may play Blu-ray but not CD or DVD, or burned discs. This is all caused by the 'optical' a part that reads the disc in the machine. Your player will need service as a Blu-ray optic cannot just be 'dropped' into a player.
You can only play blue ray format on a blueray reader. Your recorder/player requires the proper laser and programing to decode large quantities of data. Your manufacturer should clearly state whether it plays blueray fomat.
you could try getting in touch with the manufacturers of the receiver,or if you have a code in its manual for a sony dvd,you could try that as that all blueray is,it might not matter about model of dvd.
