Hi,
Symptom shows that TV has problem in deflection section and most probably convergence output ICs got heated after TV powered up and causing red-green strips. Due to excessive current drain in these 2 ICs, picture becomes smaller too.
I would check Convergence Out ICs temperature and if its getting over heated, will replace both of them.
If you are comfortable with TV repair and can sold electronics parts in circuit board, let me know to provide you more technical info.
Required Convergence out ICs (STK394-160) are available in Part Store, click to see an image and price info.
Service/ Repair Manual is available in Manual Zone for small fee, if you need to fix TV.
Thanks.

I have a hitachi 53SDX89B model rear projection. I was recently trying to have it connected to ATT Uverse TV. Every time the tech hooked the DVR receiver to one of the inputs, it knocked out the service. ...

Hi,
Hitachi 53SDX89B is September 1999 model as its mentioned on its service manual that I have.
Since tv is too old so I'm afraid, no spare boards or parts would be available any more to fix its AC leaky current issue that damaging ATT U-verse service. (power back feeding out, we call it AC leakage).
There is one solution for that problem, buy Isolation Transformer and plug your tv in it, that will cure AC leakage from your tv and wont hurt any thing attached/ connected with this tv. Your tv consume 245 Watt power while working so 500 Watt isolation transformer would be good enough to keep turn On tv for hours/ days.
Below is an image of basic isolation transformer and click HERE to get required 500W isolation transformer.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

Vertical lines and 3d ghosting

If the problem is exactly like before one of the protect resistors is bad.

The color bands denote value in resistance and usually it will be a 1.2, 1.5 or 2.2 ohm resistor. You check them with a ohm meter, like checking a fuse--any that has no reading across it is gone.

Usually they will be discolored but sometimes they open so fast they do NOT discolor.

There are only about twelve of them and many are higher values--150 ohms or more==always it is a low value resistor that opens--it is what it is there for--a chip shorts in some way and the resistor opens to protect the power supply that feeds it.

Looking is not always enough, you have to check them. If this is helpful a rating would be appreciated as I do this here for free.

I am available to assist you if you need it.

Screen distortion

Is it a clean vertical line or a fuzzy vertical line? It could be as simple as a cleaning.

CONVERGENCE

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Red Lines on Screen

Dave, HMMMM Dual pictures This is a problem that every projection TV runs into at least once or twice in its lifetime. Its the old convergence IC falure thingy. These IC's go bad and should be replace all at once. These are not consumer replaceable unless you have had training in the electronics or TV repair fields. Please call out a pro to assist you with this repair as A TV is not the place to experiment in because of the HI voltage and saftey issues. Good Luck
