Question about Homelite Garden

I am trying to find out the proper gas/oil mixture for a homelite chainsaw approximately 10 years old that was owned by my deceased father-in-law.

I would mix at 32:1. Most for the last several years recommend (by government intrusion) a ratio of 50:1 but that only serves to shorten the life of the equipment due to poor oiling & increased friction/wear. In spite of what many think, the lower ratio will not quickly foul the plug and it will extend the life of the unit.

Check your manual for the proper gas-and-oil mixture. For almost all modern two-stroke engines, a 50-to-1 mixture is recommended. That requires about 2 1/2 oz. oil for every gallon of gasoline.

Gas oil mixture


The header says that it is an electric saw which would only require bar oil. A 2-stroke gas engine, however, does require fuel mixed with a modern saw oil at 40:1 ratio plus bar/chain oil in it's own tank as well. Always premix the fuel and oil in a separate can and shake well even before filling the saw. Hope this helps!

I inherited a super xl automatic 04541447 from my deceased father and do not have a manual. Can you tell me the correct mixture for the gas?


Use 40:1 mix. Make sure to use only modern synthetic saw oils and premix in a separate can before use. Good luck!

What is the proper oil to gas ratio for a Homelite 16 inch 150 Automatic that is approximately 40 years old?


Most of the old Homelites were 32:1. I eliminated the mix problem for all my equipment when I started using a synthetic 2-cycle oil called OPTI-2. Somehow it works for all 2-cycle saws/trimmers/blowers etc. I've got equipment that's 20+ years old and still running strong with the OPTI-2.

Fuel/Oil Mixture
  1. Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the OIL supplier's recommended ratio. Today I use Stihl 2 cycle oil mixed @ 50:1 in a Pioneer that I purchased new in 1980. There are no gouges or scratches on the piston or cylinder and I have no carbon build up on the piston top. The manual (on stone tablets) recommends 24:1. Over the years the mixture has leaned from 24:1 (Saw Recommendation) to 28:1 (Lawn boy mower recommendation) to 32:1 (Oil provider 2gal premium/8oz chainsaw 2-cycle engine oil - used for many years) and finally the last 5 (±) years 50:1 (1gal premium/2.6oz Stihl 2-cycle engine oil)
  2. Any fuel containing ethanol is not good with chainsaws. Mix what you expect to use within a few weeks. Anything over 1.5 months old use up in a 4 cycle engine. HTH
