I HAD 8500 SERIES FOR 4 YEARS , WITH NO PROBLEMS. WAS RECENTLY PULLED OVER AND TOLD BY COP HE DETECTED MY DETECTOR.HE WAS COOL , HE TOLD ME I SHOULD UPGRADE TO 9500 SERIES. CAN THE 8500 SERIES BE DETECTED OR WAS HE BULL CRAPPING. STILL USING AND HAVENT BEEN STOPPED ANYMORE.
Radar detectors use what's called a superheterodyne receiver to tune in the high frequency radar signals. A side effect of this design is that they emit a small radio signal at a predictable frequency, and thus devices like the Spectre can detect them. States like Virginia (where radar detectors are illegal, f*** that state btw) equip their patrol cars with Spectres to find those of us who use them. Many commercial enforcement vehicles also have them, since it is illegal at the federal level for any vehicle requiring a commercial driver's license to have a radar detector.
The only detectors on the market now which are known to not be detectable by the latest Spectre IV units are the Bel STi Driver and the Escort Passport 9500ci. Note that this is not the standalone 9500i/9500xi unit, but the full custom installed unit with laser jamming.
If you're not one of those unfortunate enough to live in Virginia, I wouldn't bother. If you do live in VA, get the STI Driver.
Travelling through N. Ca. & had the same experience. Cop around Weed ,Ca. gave me a hefty tkt. That's the town's main source of revenue. They drop the speed limit & wait.
Certain police radar units can track you if your behind them. Since they make lots of money on speeders, they have the best & latest in radar equipment. LESSON LEARNED! When I see a cop car in front & radar goes off - SLOW DOWN IMMED.

I have an Escort Passport 8500 X50 which I have owned for apx 2 years. It now occasionally sends a message that maintenance is required. What should I do ?
