My Onkyo receiver just recently has been turning itself off while in USB mode or even Cab/Sat. The unit is approx. 2 years old. I routinely connect an I-phone and play Pandora or stored songs in USB mode. Lately, the receiver just turns off or goes into standby mode and I have to do a 'factory reset' I checked the Onkyo website and found a factory recall for the problem. After entering the serial number from my unit, Onkyo says mine isn't an affected product. Is the HDMI board the cause? I make sure there is enough room for cooling in the cabinet. Any help would be appreciated
Hi, there is no need for entering any serial numbers for factory reset. For hard reset press and hold VCR/DVR botton then press ON/STANDBY,secound later on the display should say CLEAR . So now you receiver is back to factory settings. If that works great if not try Firmware update for your model ,and if that failes
try unpluging all your speakers ,and try connecting your USB,CAB/STA or what ever you want(speakers unplaged). Btw dont forget trying different cabels. Last if all dont help you should contact ONKYO Servise/dealship.Hope ti helped you with your problem .
Hello there, even if your unit is not among the ones being recalled, it could still be an HDMI board issue, which is known to suffer from sub-par soldering on various smd components.. Check for prolonged wait time when switching between HDMI inputs or even better the impossibilty of updating the firmware via USB or network because one or both options are greyed out: both clear signs of a faulty HDMI board. On a side note you can try adding some extra ventilation and see if it makes any difference, after making sure the heatsinks inside are free from any dust..
Hope this can be of any help, while I wait for Onkyo Europe to hopefully greenlight recall of the faulty units we have over here..

This might somewhat help. Today I went back .. I went HDMI out of the Cable box and DVD player into 2 of the TVs HDMI ins. The digital audio out from each, straight to the receiver and things are working ok. All speakers are working OK. Sound isnt as loud or crisp but unfortunately I found no other solution.
SOURCE: No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK
Go to settings on PS3 and sound settings and set them to HDMI.
If the above did not work, try a auto reset, with unit connected. Hold the PS3 power button down and wait until you hear 2 beeps. The PS3 will automatically search your input/output channels.
SOURCE: Picture sound blackout (blink) when cable box/receiver HDMI used
Onkyo service told me, the second timethat I called them, that there is a known HDMI handshake issue with Motorola and Atlanta Scientific cable boxes. The only solution, and it was a solution, is to connect the box through the HDMI 1 port ONLY. All the other (2,3,4) result in blinking/dropping of signal. I did this, changed the cable/satelilte setting to HDMI 1 and all is well.

It sounds like you don't fully understand the Onkyo's HDMI port assignment procedures.
But why burden an HDMI cable with audio only? Don't you have a coaxial digital or spdif optical output on the PC you could use? That would make things simpler for setup. Just jam it into one of the appropriate audio inputs on the Onkyo.
