Hi Bill
Becarefull when going under the car and trying to crank the engine straight from the starter car may move and hurt you. What it sounds like a few things , it could be your ignition switch, could be your security system if you have a chip on your key it maybe the key itself about 35 dollar fix purchase from GM only and they will program chip on the key, aso could be your shifter switch in the colum and down in your floor shifter. This an electrical problem and if its a bad ground somwhere in your wiring harness behind the dash in the engine compartment or even a fusable link that goes to the starter so many posiabilities, one thing for sure your battery and starter are fine as you have attemped to start
One more thing if you can get a starter button and hooked it to your staer while the car is on safty stands and you hae someone helping you at all times ,once you connect the thw hand held switch get up from under the car make sure emergency brakes are on all time and your wheels are bloced and you are in the drivers seat only then,,, turn the key on position and then activate the hand held starter switch and the engine will keep running if not you will still need help to locate the problem........ Electrical is not for everyone and can get expensive 100 dollars an hour for electrical all the best

Mechanic was not sure how to reset maintenance overdue message once he serviced car. He tried pressing and unpressing trip odometer a few times without success while car was not running.

Got this of a forum. It's for the key less cars. Credit goes to the original poster.

2008-2009 Volvos with starter push button on dashboard

The trip odometer must have at least 0.1 mile on it or the light will not reset.
Get in vehicle and do not push down on the brake pedal
Put the key in the slot and push the starter button once
Press and hold down the odometer reset button
While doing this, push the starter button again and hold for 2 seconds
Keep the odometer reset button held in and watch the instrument cluster for the general warning indicator (I) to illuminate. When this happens, release the button.
Turn the vehicle off then back on and verify the message is now out.

1982 Suzuki GS850 GL will only run with the starter button held

Obviously the CDI is picking up power from the starter button. Check the ignition key switch for proper operation. Chances are that whatever fried the loom also fried part of the switch. Alternate to that, trace the wire powering the CDI system, disconnect it at the source (starter button connection), then find a power source that is live only when the key is turned on and then hook the CDI wire up there.

an I get a “very helpful” rating on this answer?

Dryer turns on when botton held down

Motor has a "Run" winding centrifugal switch that may need to be replaced. Start button energizes the starter winding but when the "run" switch fails the motor won't keep running. Switch is easily replaced without taking motor apart.
