Question about Tomtom GPS

2 Answers

My Tomtom no longer speaks to me. I've tried the wrench - and done "turn on sound" thing - to no avail. If I don't get verbal directions I can't use it. I've had it since Cristman 2008.

Hello, My Tomtom used to speak to me all along the route. It even told me to turn right at the end of my driveway. It warned me of turns ahead, and included "You have reached your destination." It told me to turn back when I didn't follow directions, etc., etc. Now it does not speak at all! I have tapped the wrench and turned on the speaker, turned it off and on......etc. Your previous reply did not fit the problem.

I followed your directions. There is no screen listing "read aloud street numbers" Also, I want road and street nos/names. I live in the country. It used to do that perfectly well. This is Tomtom ONE, 3rd edition (4 No 1.003) , N 14644.

2. Tap 'Change preferences'
3. Tap the arrow to get to page 2 of Preferences
4. Tap 'Change voice'
5. Tap arrows until you get a computer voice - I chose Samantha.
6. Tap the 'Select' button to the right of the voice picture.

    Hi,

    For our model :-

Touch tools > settings > language > voice.

Voice- changes the language for voice promts.

Languages noted with a persons name are (tts)
text to speak voices. ( ie: American English Jill ) will speak

which have an extensive vocabulary and pronounce
the street names as you approach turns.

Let me know if that wouldn't work.

    Thanks.

As far as I can tell the Tom tom only speaks the street names when you use the computer voice (female, Amanda) and not any of the other voices. let me know you tried to switch this mode??/

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

No voice

Go to Garmin's Web Updater webpage and download and install the program. Follow the directions to update the firmware and voices. TTS types are "Text To Speech" and will read and speak street names, like "Turn right to Elm Street, etc. Those that lack TTS are standard voices - they will only say "Turn right in 100 feet" in the same place on the road.

Go though the device menu settings and make sure that you have a voice selected "Jack US English" or "Jill US English" are the typical TTS voices chosen for US English speaking drivers.

Good luck!

My Garmin GPS no longer speaks the directions like it used to--still makes the beeps when pressing the buttons, but no voice giving directions

Check the preferences. You didn't say what model you have, but if your menu is the same as mine, here's how:
- go to tools (the icon is a wrench)
- navigation
- if "voice prompts" says "None" you've found the problem. Change it to "Guidance/Status"
One more thing to check:
- click "Back" and choose "Locale"
check the language selection (the one with the lips icon is for the spoken language) and change it if necessary.

Speaker works for playing of MP3 songs but does not give direction instructions when on purely satnav. Have tried increasing/decreasing volume but no sound comes out of the unit. Have also done a factory...

spoken directions are only available when the computer generated voice has been activated. If you choose any other voice, you will no longer get spoken directions

I have a tomtom xxl.s gps does not speak streets name

Not all sound files speak out the street names. If you would like to have the street names spoken, you need to select a voice that ends with computer. For example, the voice file selection: Simon, English UK, Computer will speak street names. But the voice file, Bonnie, English US, will not speak Street names. Dave, English US, computer will give you street names but Lori or Mandy, English US will not.Procedure to get the street names spoken: Tap on main screen. Tap on change preferences. Tap on arrow. Tap on change voices. Tap (select) a voice that ends with computer. Tap select. Tap done till you reach the main screen.

Keyless chuck is stuck open

That can happen if the jaws inside the chuck, usually 3 triangular pieces get jammed together. With chuck facing down tap chuck several times to loosen jaws. If that doesn't work spray a small amount of WD-40 into chuck and try again

Not speaking street names

To get your TomTom to speak street names, you will need to change the voice from a recorded voice to a computer voice. This can be done by:
  • Connect your TomTom to your computer
  • When the TomTom asks do you want to connect to the computer, choose Yes
  • Open the TomTom Home application
  • Click on the 'Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras, etc.' button
  • Click on the 'Voices' button
  • Click on the 'Computer Voices' button
You can now select a voice to install on the device.
Once you have installed a voice, change it by
  • Disconnect the TomTom from your computer
  • Turn on the TomTom
  • Touch the screen to bring up the menu
  • Touch 'Change Preferences'
  • Touch 'Voice Preferences'
  • Touch 'Change Voice'
  • Use the Left / Right arrows to navigate to the voice you just installed (Look for the word 'computer' in the upper right corner by the male/female option)
  • Touch the 'Select' button

Volume made a couple of odd noises and then stopped speaking

Plug a headset into the audio jack and see if there's audio when Jack or Jill speak. If no audio there, you've got a defective audio amplifier stage. If audio can be heard through a headset, you've got a blown speaker.
You'll need to send it back to Garmin for repair in either case, though in the case of a blown speaker, you <could> use external Ipod-type speakers, if you didn't mind the kludge.

Rusted oil pan screw

Ooff many things could be done here, I'd start by trying to use more leverage to try and get the bolt free (longer wrench, socket with a power bar). Try using the box end of a wrench and tapping the other end with a hammer. Don't use excessive force or you might break the threads out of the pan. A little heat around the plug (without melting the pan) with a propane torch might also help a bit. If this doesn't work, an impact gun with a socket will probably work (wear old clothes or coveralls because you will get nice and oily on this one, believe me I speak from experience) Sometimes it has to be done.

All this of course will probably work unless some dumb*** welded the plug back on. Sounds kind of funny but a lot of quick oil change places will occasionally strip threads on a plug and then weld it back on the pan, it is done a little bit too commonly...

If you tried everything else and the plug won't come out, or if the plug was welded, you will need to replace the oil pan...
