Estate by whirlpool model SM8280867. Filled, then stopped. What's wrong?

Charla, By what you have stated, it sounds like a lid switch failure. I recommend checking the screws for the lid hinge first. The lid has to be closed for the motor to run in the washer. If the lid switch is faulty, it will act as if the lid is open. A quick check you can do is to run a cycle with the lid switch jumped. If the washer operates, the lid switch needs to be replaced.
To jump the lid switch you need to unplug the washer and open the console.Once you have the console open, locate the connector for the lid switch. Place an insulated jumper between the gray and white wires. Not the green it is a ground and will cause a short. After inserting the jumper make sure it will not touch anything metal, plug the washer in. Then start the washer in a cycle, and let it go. If the washer completes the cycle, you need to replace the lid switch. Remove the jumper and order the part. The jumper is only of the test do not continue to operate after test.

Brand new Whirlpool WTW4800XQ out of box . Set up plugged in , loaded load pushed start lid locked hummed lid lock started flashing. waited till lid lock went off Still nothing

Before you attempt to do anything please check if the drum lock is removed, check the power plug, connect the water line inlet. and finally check the settings of the program.
Read through the manual and DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO ANY REPAIR AS BEING A NEW SET you have warranty.
Call your dealer if the set hums even after the initial checks were done.

HOW DO I BYPASS KENMORE SERIES 80 LID SWITCH ON THE WASHER. IT WILL NOT SPIN , BSD LID SWITCH.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

Replace lid switch on whirlpool washer # LSB6300PW2

The following link explains step-by-step how to access the lid switch on your washer:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-replacing_lid_switch_whirlpool_top

The lid switch on your washer is located by the left lid hinge under the washer casing. Simply remove the mounting screws, any ground wire and slide off the actuator rod of the lid hinge.

NOTE: In some cases, what appears to be a bad lid switch is a simple matter of adjusting the actuator rod by bending it slightly to make better contact.

If you have questions about this repair, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

My whirlpool washer won't spin dry

There is a failsafe mechanism that will prevent the washer from spinning while the lid is open. It is possible that either the post has broken or the switch has failed, making the washer 'think' that the lid is open. The filling and wash cycles will operate normally even if the lid is open.

Washer does not drain and spin

If this a whirlpool brand washer, check your lid switch. When they start going bad, they can be intermitent. While the washer is in the spin cycle, if there is no motor noise, push down on the lid above the lid switch and see if it starts.
This is the most common issue.
I hope this helps
