Merc 4 stroke rocker outboard problems - Mercury Marine 4hp & 6hp Stroke Outboards Outboard, 55lb., 15" Shaft

4-stroke engine doesn't need a petroil mix like a 2-stroke so you can go ahead and fill with straight petrol.

A 4-stroke engine is lubricated by oil from the crankcase, the sump or circulated from a separate oil tank. Be sure to know how to check the oil level and what grade to use and to check the level regularly.

being 1984 iot is possible that it is a 2 stroke
simple check

does it have removable rocker covers

available from any merc outboard service shop
if there is none close , the kit may be generic so mariner pump may fit
talk with outboard shop spares

for that year of manufacture 4 strokes were not the normal thing in outboards
if it doesn't have rocker covers and rocker gear it is a 2 stroke

the serial number begins 2487558 and continues past 2491265 and as the beginning serial number denotes the year , your engine is 1969 model
it shows as a 2 stroke with auto oil injection
check the heads
if the plugs are in the flat of the head and there are no rocker covers it is 2 stroke
talk with a mercury /mariner service center

visit a mechanic

Red is Battery +
Red/purple is ignition
Yellow/red is startermotor
Black/yellow is motor kill
Black is ground

To have ignition, black/yellow wire must be disconnected
On is red/purple on bat+
To start Yellow/red on batt+
To kill: black/yellow on ground

I have a 25 hp merc outboard that starts right up but idles high then low and when running it just dies . Is it a choke problem?
