Are you certain that the needle is in correctly? If it opens at the front the flat side of the needle should be facing the back. If it opens on the left hand side then the flat part of the needle should be facing into the body of the machine. If top and bottom are threaded correctly and the needle is in properly and fully in position it should pick up. If it doesnt then you "could" have a timing fault.

Make sure that you have the needle's flat side facing the rear of the machine, or else it will never grab the thread. Also, make sure you hold the top thread in your left hand until it grabs the thread and you pull the bobbin thread up

Check the tension. Make sure the bobbin tension isn't too tight and/or that the top tension isn't too loose. If the bobbin tension is too tight it won't be able to be drawn up and make the stitch. If the top tension isn't tight enough it also won't be able to draw the thread up. They need to be balanced to work together.
Test the bobbin tension by dangling the bobbin (in the casing) by the thread and give a slight flick of your wrist. It should drop down a bit as the thread is released. If it hits the floor it is too loose btw. If it doesn't drop a bit without great yanking it is too tight.
Then check your top tension and make sure there's a bit of resistance when you pull on the thread.
If you're having a lot of problems first try sewing on a plain cotton material and examine the stitch when set to a wide zig zag. When you get it adjusted so it sews that correctly then go back to what you were sewing on and make sure you have the right size and type of needle and that it is inserted correctly.
One of those things should correct the problem.
