When you insert the bobbin into the bobbin case and insert into machine, make sure there is a long tail coming out of the bobbin.
Thread machine correctly and when trying to "pick-up" the bobbin thread, make sure you are spinning the flywheel the right direction.

Are you certain that the needle is in correctly? If it opens at the front the flat side of the needle should be facing the back. If it opens on the left hand side then the flat part of the needle should be facing into the body of the machine. If top and bottom are threaded correctly and the needle is in properly and fully in position it should pick up. If it doesnt then you "could" have a timing fault.

Make sure that you have the needle's flat side facing the rear of the machine, or else it will never grab the thread. Also, make sure you hold the top thread in your left hand until it grabs the thread and you pull the bobbin thread up

Check the tension. Make sure the bobbin tension isn't too tight and/or that the top tension isn't too loose. If the bobbin tension is too tight it won't be able to be drawn up and make the stitch. If the top tension isn't tight enough it also won't be able to draw the thread up. They need to be balanced to work together.

Test the bobbin tension by dangling the bobbin (in the casing) by the thread and give a slight flick of your wrist. It should drop down a bit as the thread is released. If it hits the floor it is too loose btw. If it doesn't drop a bit without great yanking it is too tight.

Then check your top tension and make sure there's a bit of resistance when you pull on the thread.

If you're having a lot of problems first try sewing on a plain cotton material and examine the stitch when set to a wide zig zag. When you get it adjusted so it sews that correctly then go back to what you were sewing on and make sure you have the right size and type of needle and that it is inserted correctly.

One of those things should correct the problem.

My needle doesn't pick up the bobbin thread

If your sewing machine's needle is not picking up the bobbin thread, there could be a few potential causes for this issue. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
  1. Check the bobbin case: Make sure that the bobbin case is correctly seated in the machine and that the bobbin is properly installed in the case. If the bobbin is not installed correctly, the needle may not be able to pick up the thread.
  2. Check the thread tension: The tension of the thread in the bobbin case and the needle can affect the ability of the needle to pick up the bobbin thread. If the tension is too loose or too tight, it can cause the needle to skip the bobbin thread. You can adjust the tension by using the tension adjustment dial on the machine or by consulting the owner's manual for your specific model of sewing machine.
  3. Check the needle: Make sure that the needle is properly installed and that it is not bent or damaged. If the needle is not seated correctly or is damaged, it may not be able to pick up the bobbin thread.
  4. Check for other issues: There could be other issues with the sewing machine that are causing the problem

My upper thread wont pick up the bobbin thread suddenly. How do I fix that problem?

Install a brand new needle. A bent/dull/damaged needle sometimes will not pick up bobbin thread.

Check that the needle is installed facing the correct direction.

Also check that the bobbin is wound smoothly, the bobbin is turning the correct direction in the bobbin case, and the bobbin tension is threaded correctly.

If it still will not pick up the bobbin thread, there is most likely a timing issue, ie the needle is arriving at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread. Search the internet for sewing machine timing discussions or take it for service.

Needle not picking up bobbin thread and it makes funny loud noise

Sometimes both symptoms are a result of a bent, dull, or damaged needle. Try installing a brand new needle.

If it is still not picking up the bobbin thread and making a noise, take it for service. It most likely has a needle/hook timing issue and the noise could be the needle making contact with the needleplate or in the bobbin area. Continued use could cause the needle to break and flying pieces of needle, in most cases, are not a good thing.

The bobbin thread will not pick up. How do I fix it?

First, install a brand new needle and verify that it is facing the correct way and it is the proper needle for your machine.

Confirm the bobbin has been installed in the bobbin case so it is unwinding the bobbin the proper direction as you pull the bobbin thread.

Six Common Sewing Machine Problems Solved

If it still will not pick up the bobbin thread, open the bobbin area of the machine and watch the needle action as you hand-turn the handwheel. You may see why it is not picking up the thread because the needle could be arriving too soon or too late to intercept the bobbin thread. If this is happening, the needle/hook is out of time. Take it for service.
